Finally sat down and worked out the MPG. Over 208 miles (unusually 80 of which were motorway) and £30 of diesel, I managed 29.5mpg. Not awful, not great. But at least I know.

So based on your 29.5mpg compared to what you would like to achieve. How many dollars (Pounds) per year is it costing you to avoid driving a Toyota shopping trolley?

I bet it is not than many to maintain a grin on your face!

Oh yes, totally agree. It felt like I was getting far less but knowing it is roughly that isn't so bad. And as you say, it does make me smile driving it. FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

I dont think the Fl2 is too bad on fuel given its abilities , I've had diesel cars which weren't much better .

Mine has been doing 39 to41 mpg since I bought it in 2010. Mostly short journeys with occasional longer motorway trips. The on-board reading is fairly accurate when I check it against fill to fill assuming the mileage reads true. Very Happy

I live in rural Devon, we rarely have traffic hold-ups, only when I occasionally travel into Exeter. Feel sorry for you city drivers.

Are those high figures calculated off an average of at least 3 consecutive tanks of fuel? Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I check the on-board mpg reading against full tank and mileage every now and again and they agree to within 0.5 mpg. Its currently showing 39.7 mpg.

I`m getting the same sort of mileage as Devon Dave with it averaging between 38 to about 42 with a mix of stop start and motorway driving on my daily commute. Worse MPG was 32 when towing a 17ft caravan on a 400 mile round trip. I normally stick £30 in the tank which gets me between 220 and 240miles before the fuel light comes on again. Given how good an all rounder the Freelander is I`m more than happy with that sort of running costs Thumbs Up

I’m still a newbie on the FL2, first tank-full gave me a reading of 38.6 on the dash, but a calculated 36.8 on re-fill. Still on the second fill and the dash is reading 40.8 (although it was up at 45.1 at one point last week). As mentioned above, it will take a few tanks to get a meaningful figure to determine dash accuracy.

I’ve got the stop-start model (although the stop-start has never kicked in - presumably a sign that I need a new battery) but I find that the “change-up” arrow on the dash has helped me. I’m sure I would be running around at higher revs in a lower gear much more, if it wasn’t for the reminder. The engine copes so well that I find that on relatively small rural roads, I can sit in 6th gear between 1,000 and 1,500 revs, only dropping into 4th for steeper hills or tighter bends. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

All these tank to tank figures are really just “snapshots”. I have owned my MY10 HSE Auto for 3 years 9 months and done 32,728 miles @ 28.74 mpg over the duration. The only true figure! This includes some caravan holidays, towing 1450kg. Yet, yesterday I did a 100 mile round trip on good roads at an indicated 37mpg, which may look good but is only a “snapshot”.

Well all data has to be used appropriately (and my single full-to-full figure is also my current lifetime-consumption average! Smile)

My “snapshot” is enough to tell me that I got somewhere in the region of 36mpg over the course of my first week of ownership using diesel at £1.25/litre, when the week before, my old car gave me roughly 42mpg using petrol at £1.19/litre. That is useful information for my forward budgeting.

The difference between what I got in week one versus the dash reading, tells me that the dash may be reading slightly high and that I need to do more work to verify that. My previous car’s trip computer was surprisingly accurate for all the time that I owned it. So, again, the “snapshot” data has been useful to me.

As time goes on, I will learn more about how different uses affect fuel consumption, informed mainly by short-term data (just as you know you got good fuel consumption on your recent trip).

Medium and long-term data also has its uses - but a time-series of individual snapshots is open to much more analysis than a single life-time figure! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

My D3 is currently averaging around 18mpg
The Defender gets even less
The Freelander must be down into single figures Laughing

I don't care. They need fuel, they get fuel. The pleasure each one gives driving individually more than makes up for the cost of fuel Thumbs Up

I know we’re in danger of going off topic here, but you’re right and it makes an interesting comparison to the 3,605 miles that I’ve done in the SDV8, during the 6 weeks that I’ve owned it, at 25.46mpg. Doesn’t seem so bad now Thumbs Up
