United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Orkney Grey
New Tyre

I have just replaced my nearside rear Goodyear Wrangler after a sidewall puncture. Is it OK to drive with the new tyre opposite the other three that have done 3,889 miles since they were fitted in June.

Thanks Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto in Orkney Grey

Maximum radius difference permissible is 5mm. (so on an identical tyre, up to 5mm difference in tread depth is acceptable for the 4WD system).

So in your case, assuming the same make and model of tyre, yes as you won't have burned 5mm tread in 3889 miles.

Even on a 2WD car, tread differential on any axel should in any case be less than 3mm different to ensure even braking, especially in the wet. On a 4WD car, the radius similarity applies to all four tyres - so don't have a new set up front and a well worn set at the back (or vice versa)

Or as AW14 more succinctly answered:-

"Yes"
