I come from a time when there were no handheld calculators and we had to do our tables absolutely vital to be able to double check that the figures on the calculator are somewhere in the region you are expecting unfortunately nowadays if you go into a shop and the till/calculator does not work then most seem incapable of doing the simplest maths so you go away empty handed,on another tack the council in Chard put up a road traffic sign in metric so a quick call to the right office had it removed and a proper one in yards put in its place, long live the old values! They add 2 numbers up on their smartphone!

During school years we change to metric.

Down under some stuff is imperial. TVs, wheel rims, car display screens, mobile phone size, fishing rods, surfboard length but the riders weight is metric! A lot of smart watches have inch based screens. My wind up watch is 35mm diameter! Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I get a locals' 10% discount at my local coffee shop. Coffee was £2.20 on the day they introduced it so I said that's £1.98 then. Looks of shock horror and how did you do that? You knock 22p off £2.20 and it comes to £1.98. Mad scramble to find a calculator to check my figures. Later that day one of the brighter members of staff programmed a 10% discount button into the till.

I can remember back in the 60's when everyone could do £sd calculations in their heads and it was no big deal. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
