United Kingdom

That's very true. I'm still inclined to think that things will work out more or less OK in the end, but a lot depends on the trade terms we end up with as regards the EU. EU rules require a minimum percentage of EU input in cars imported within the trade bloc, which it is already a struggle for companies like Honda to meet. If we are outside the trading bloc that percentage can't be met, so tariffs would apply. I think the future for firms like Honda may well depend on how many cars they can sell within the UK - if their main market is EU they are likely to move production there sooner or later. At the moment they are benefitting from the massive depreciation of the pound, and this would be enough to offset 10% tariffs at least in the near future, but maybe not long term. Even so, I understand that BMW, the only German manufacturer active in the UK, have contingency plans to move Mini production to Austria, and I think Land Rover are also looking that way. More of a problem though, as Honda states, is the movement of components across borders. You can't set up a British parts supply industry overnight. And remember too that there is no "British" car industry any more. It's all Japanese, Chinese or Indian owned, so the ultimate decisions won't be made here. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Auto Zermatt Silver

Some good points raised there.

It's ironic to think that it was Honda that introduced the "Just in time" way of working to UK car plants, prior to that there were warehouses on site crammed with components waiting to be fitted, body shells and parts would be sat outside in all weathers and the whole process of putting a car together was pretty much chaos. There has been a lot of investment since then and quite recently too by the likes of Tata and Toyota, it would cost them a lot to move all their production to other countries, however, goverments are happy to offer incentives to bring that kind of business into the country, something our own goverment needs to be aware of. It's impossible to know how this will all shake out in the end, all I hope is that whatever the outcome, jobs remain here in the UK as the workforce we have now in the industry is leaps and bounds ahead of what we used to see in the 1970's
