If I were you, I'd take it back to the garage and ask his opinion of the engine now. Then ask why he , as a qualified mechanic, diagnosed a duff engine when you , who isn't qualified at mechanics , managed to sort the vehicle after you changed a few things. Things that he obviously missed - or deliberately failed to tell you about in order to charge you an absolute fortune. I wonder whether he would have just replaced the parts you did and claimed to have changed the whole engine..........
