New and many thanks Paul

Morning new to this site and my first post my names Paul and I would like to to thank everyone who has shared their problems with vehicles on this site. It has been invaluable and most informative. I bought a second hand 2007 Freelander 2 from auction a few weeks ago. To be honest I only bought for the dog the wife was sick and tired of dog hairs in her Volvo. Anyway once I got home and having driven the vehicle a number if issues became apparent , turbo lag wushing noise under load and general all round unhealthy running. Didn't really bother me as I got the vehicle at the right price. I work abroad so thought to save time I would send it too the local Landrover non franchise specialist. I booked it in for a full service and fault finding appointment. On arrival he took the car for a drive put it on the ramps and removed the top cover. At this point he phoned me up and said I need a new engine please come down and he will point out why. When I arrived at the garage I was taken to the car and asked to listen to the engine when under load. Yes there was a diesel knock and yes also the turbo washing sound. The gentleman told me it would be a recon engine as if he stripped it he might never find the problem and in all his years he has never heard a noise like that. To cut a long story short for some unknown reason I didn't believe him started doing some research on this site and came to the conclusion that I would try a few remedies my self.

Firstly I found a split in the top part of the inter cooler hose along with a faulty MAF sensor. I also blanked off the EGR valve changed all filters and fuel filter along with all brakes and discs. The car is now driving 100% and doesn't require a replacement engine. I find it very sad that in this day and age people are still trying to rip you off. Cheers for all your help next plan of action is all the ancillary belts and timing belt.....

Hi Paul, welcome to site and to the world of Freelander 2 ownership. Looks like you saved yourself a fortune taking on the work yourself. There is a mass of information on here and so many helpful people. I hope you continue to enjoy your Freelander and look forward to your updates.

If I were you, I'd take it back to the garage and ask his opinion of the engine now. Then ask why he , as a qualified mechanic, diagnosed a duff engine when you , who isn't qualified at mechanics , managed to sort the vehicle after you changed a few things. Things that he obviously missed - or deliberately failed to tell you about in order to charge you an absolute fortune. I wonder whether he would have just replaced the parts you did and claimed to have changed the whole engine..........
It would be interesting to find out his excuse.
