2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black
Do all SD4's suffer from hesitation and jerky gear changes?

After many years of relatively trouble free motoring with my 2007 TD4 GS Auto, about 3 months ago, I bought a low mileage 63 plate HSE Lux SD4. Whilst generally I am very pleased, I am concerned that every now and again, when pulling away the SD4 hesitates and I sometimes wish I had been wearing brown trousers getting stuck for a few seconds with busy traffic bearing down on me. I've been trying to nail down what the conditions are that causes this but its so random. its happened about 20 times over the 3 months and also associated with jerky changes. Do I have to put up with it or is it a known problem which Land rover can fix?

I've had a 2013 SD4 for 3 months now and I've noticed the hesitation, my old TD4 manual hesitated at times. Somewhere on the forum is a post about SD4's that jerked when setting off, mine does this very occasionally. The answer was that there is a software update for the gearbox and I think this covered hesitation aswell. I've noticed the hesitation seems to occur when setting off from a stationary position, if the car is allowed to creep forward from stationary position then the gas is applied then there is no hesitation. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

This is the software update mentioned on another thread. I'm sure the other thread mentioned hesitation.

On SD4 six speed Evoques, there was an update that cured the hesitation problem. Made the gearchanges a lot smoother and gave a couple of more MPG. Mine had it done when it went in for a routine service and was very noticeable afterwards. Don't know if it applies to the late FL2's but may be worth asking your dealer about it. Try searching out Q585 campaign update on the 'net.

Edit: Already mentioned on here. http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic27458.html Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Thanks for replies. Mine hesitates intermittently when pulling away from rest. Interestingly, I expected better fuel consumption as well - published figures suggest 40mpg combined - I'm lucky to get just over 30 mpg and I do drive conservatively.

What prompted my post was that I picked up a pair of roof bars from a guy who just got rid of his Metropolis SD4 which had the same issues as mine and he went for a new 2.0l DS - no problems with that.

mine is going into Lancasters LR in Tonbridge, on Wednesday, so its great to know that there are other SD4's with this issue and I wont be fobbed off with "can't find anything wrong with mine".

I have tried squeezing the throttle very gently from rest, but I shouldn't have to, because there are times when you need to pull out quickly, but at the moment I cant trust it.

Yes, I started a thread on this as mine had hesitation from rest & jerky down changes.

There is a lot of information in a long running threadHere
Unfortunately we keep getting new threads popping up and it becomes a little disjointed.

The man threads are
Jerky Automatic

Intermediate Missing

Early SD4 Hesitation

There are some others but these contain most info needed, I don't think merging them will achieve the desired result as they seem to be slight differences.

When it comes to software updates (particularly here as there seems to be 2 or 3 mentioned) does a new update replace the previous version or could it be that the dealer/indy need to do more than one update the fix an issue? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
