propshaft - I thought it was all going so well

hi all, recently bought my freelander,I bought it private for a decent price so had budgeted for any problems well within reason.

anyhow got under the car today as i have noticed a slight clunk noise in the front of the car when taking up the drive and changing gear,

i have receipts from last year when the previous owner replace both front drive shafts but i checked them any way and there was no play there.

what i have noticed is a slight play between the outer and inner propshaft, ( the front section) almost as if the two are separated.

Is this normal, there doesn't seem to be any play in the front uj or the rear uj.

also i have read that its difficult to remove the propshaft from the rear dif / haldex unit

has anyone any info on this

Driveline slop can also be in front transfer box, or splined coupling between that and main gearbox.
make sure both front wheels can't turn, put gearbox in park (1st if manual?), and try to turn prop-shaft.

Seem to remember dropping the prop-shaft a few years ago when I had to drop the fuel tank, don't remember it being particularly difficult. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

hi, there is no play between the front ird and the front flange on the propshaft, but the outer casing of the propshaft does move
if i try to rotate it whilst holding the front flange so that it can't move.

is this normal and if so how much play should there be

Hi all,

Not want to hijack this thread, but it seems that I have a similar issue. Is there any experience regarding wear/play in the propshaft? Does it need to replaced as a whole unit, or are the bearings and joints available separately?

Basically I have no issues, but there is a slight clunk noise in the front of the car when taking up the drive from standstill.

MrRover are you sure your noise is from the front and not the well documented dink noise from the Haldex/Diff area, normally heard when setting off in reverse having come from a forward gear. You can tell by disabling the Haldex by the fuse which stops it.

Well before you start Whistle go pull your haldex fuse and see if it ceases. Be good info to have seen as you've had a consistent dink too.

I reckon the rear half shafts. Went in a number of times while in warranty. Haldex has been serviced by Bell so quite sure its not that. Quite attached to my dink now Laughing FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years
