Spraying vents and grill

Hi guys,

Just looking for some advice, I've recently purchased a 2010 santorini black FL2. I've saw a few pics of models with the black side vents are grill and I think I'd like this on my car. A quick google search has brought up replacement grills and side vents for about £200 but can I just get these paints for cheaper. I'd like them to match the paint work, can I paint them myself and if so where would I get the paint from?

Thanks

Thanks chicken George, I'll have a look, what do you think about getting them painted and can I do them myself?

Only you will know if you have the skill to spray at a level that will enhance your car. The actual process is not difficult, just takes an element of preparation and attention to detail. Side vents are easy as removal is straightforward. Grills take more prep as they will need masking up. All very do-able if you have the skill. Material cost should only be £20 or so. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory

Thanks for your reply, would you happen to know where I could buy the paint and would I need to buy a lacquer to spray over it?

If you have the paint code off the door pillar you should be able to get a good match with a rattle can from a motor factors. Personally I would do the vents first then decide if you want clearcoat on top once the paint has fully cured. If you have a less than perfect finish (dull etc) a coat of gloss clearcoat can often remedy the situation without rubbing down and starting again. FL2 Metropolis, Loire Blue, ebony/ivory

Another important thing is to prep the surface really good.

No need to sand - just wash and dry then use a scotchbrite pad to create a key for the new paint - wipe with thinners or white spirit, mask off carefully (this takes the longest) and take your time spraying Thumbs Up No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

Yes, preparation is the key to a good finish. Take your time and lay down coats of paint gradually in several fine layers rather than trying to cover the part in one or two passes.
Whatever you do, don't be tempted by the cheap aftermarket side vents that are already painted black. They are cheap for a reason. I bought some and the indicators do not stay in, as the plastic on the vent where the indicators clip in is too brittle and breaks easily. Once this happened there was no way it will stay in put than bonding the indicator in place.
I was lucky enough to come across a pair of genuine black vents on eBay at a reasonable £30. After fitting them I sprayed my original vents and the crappy aftermarket ones different colours just to see what I preferred. I've also sprayed my grille (HST type) in satin black. I also have a spare HST grille sprayed in black with a red surround - but won't be fitting that any time soon. Embarassed
I would, however, like to re-badge mine in red, just to give some contrast. However I cannot find the badges I need for my i6.
