2012 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Auto Ipanema Sand
ATF Spec

I want to change my ATF after 70k Miles to date.

I think this is the right spec ATF for use in my 2012 SD4 Auto.

Anyone able to confirm that I am correct?

2012 SD4 Handbook on Topix says to use Nippon AW-1.

And that oil is JWS3309, not AW1.
Read the label carefully, don't be distracted by the name...

Hi Alex

That is disappointing although I can see what you mean when you roll over the label.

Are there any known branded alternatives to using LR own Nippon AW-1 ATF product as it costs £36 a litre.
That seems outrageously expensive. I can't seem to find any on line.

How about this one....

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-906-motul-mult...l-atf.aspx

Fully synthetic and definitely this one lists AW-1 in the spec.

I assume it is backward compatible with older ATFs hence the 3309 also mentioned in the spec?

Plus 5 litres available for less than £50 unlike the 36 a liter LR OEM product Freelander 2 2012 HSE Auto SD4 Ipanema Sand

It's too generic that one....
The AW1 spec. has a much lower viscosity than the JWS3309, in order to cope with the much intense performance vs. fuel efficiency compromise and usage in the new version of the box. Hence the frequent fluid changes.
It's hard to believe that they can manufacture an oil that it's good in almost all applications, like that long list says...
Better look for a more narrow AW1 (I believe JWS3324) specification.

Don't get me wrong, but it's amazing how people are looking for cheaper and cheaper alternatives for servicing items of thousands of pounds... Even if you buy LR, the cost wont be much bigger than a tank or two of fuel, considering that you can't drop more than 3 liters per change... And how many tanks of fuel you pay between autobox oil changes? What's one or two more compared with the peace of mind that you put the right fluid?
But then again, it's your decision and please don't take personally the above.

Hi Alex

No offense taken.

In fact, I think that you are right.
I will use the LR AW-1 OEM product after all.

Thanks for your input. Freelander 2 2012 HSE Auto SD4 Ipanema Sand

Atf and interesting info.

I was looking online and on you tube search for Dan amsoil.
He explains very well about the specs of atf.
I thought the detail was good and really quite educational when we are all talking about various oils.
Is there any documentation showing the spec required for the atf?

Ian.
