Hi Alex, I'm thinking I just didn't give it a fair chance to start after fitting the new ring. With the old ring I could see signal on the scope but being on my own it was difficult to get a good view of the signal to see the pattern so I decided to change the ring as it was as low cost ebay item however I had to machine a spacer so that I could use the old style crank pulley. (The old ring was the old type one with a wide spacer boss forming part of the ring)
After fitting the new ring I could see the square wave signal on the scope so thought that it would be good, as a matter of course I went back to check the cam sensor to check it was getting power, connected they scope to check for a signal gave the engine a crank after giving a squirt of 'easy start' and it then burst into life.
I can only guess that the originals ring must have been damaged when I removed it to renew the cam belt and water pump. I probably didn't take enough care of the ring after removing it.
I bought the car with a broken exhaust cam (pump drive sheared) and didn't know what others had done prior to me obtaining the vehicle. The HP fuel pump was off and in the boot The battery had been flattened and charged a few times prior top me getting the car.
I's been a very interesting project and I've learnt a lot about modern day engine control systems. It's also been a bit frustrating at times for an old boy like me. The Freel2 Forum has been a great help. Its great to be able to chat with ace experienced fellows such as yourself. Thanks again Alex and everyone.

.Its the only proper way to diagnose vehicle faults. I just wish garages would learn to use them.
