Range Rover Evoque wheels on Freelander 2

Bought a set of Evoque alloys style 506 18 inch and Peirelli Scorpion tyres off fleabay yesterday.
All as new and removed by Land rover dealer to put on 20 inch wheels
Today
All four wheels had valves inserted, inflated and balanced.
On road test above 50 mph there was a serious vibration throughout the car and through the steering wheel.
Returned to the tyre shop and had the front two tyres re-balanced another road test but no different.
Returned to tyre shop and had rear two wheels rebalanced again no difference.
Returned to tyre shop and removed two rear wheels and replaced with original wheels. Again no difference.
Now getting a groundhog day feeling! Returned and had nearside front wheel removed and replaced with original.
You guessed it still as bad. So that is where we are at the moment. We know there is a problem with the front offside wheel. Tomorrow I intend to try the other three wheels individually to see if they run true. The tyre shop have been very helpful but as I didn’t buy the wheels and tyres from them they are getting sick of the sight of me.

Are all Evoque combinations suitable for Freelander 2

Mine is a 2013 GS

Any ideas ?
cheers

Tom

You shouldn't have a problem fitting Evoque wheels to a FL2, it should simply be a 'bolt on and go' Confused

I take it that the mating surfaces of the hubs and wheels are nice and flat?
Also, that the wheels are tightened up in sequence properly - eg, tightening opposing nuts, slightly, then tighter using same sequence - rather than an air gun tightening up each one, straight off, as the nuts are put on.

Spigots normally cure a problem like this, but it shouldn't need them (nor have the space to fit them) in the first place. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Thanks all for the replies. Bow down

Steve I thought that may be the case but I put the original wheels on for the journey home and all was fine.

Are the wheel nuts the same?

I can only think that at some point between removal from the Evoque and pick up by me the wheels or tyres have been damaged.

Further investigation tomorrow. will update on results.

I should have known that a new set of alloys and tyres for £450 was too good to be true! Big Cry

Are you sure the wheels are running true in the first place.
I know your fitters may have checked them for balance, but are they buckled in any way e.g. have they come off a crashed vehicle? FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

If they were buckled, even slightly, I would have thought it would have stuck out like a sore thumb when they were spun up on the balancing machine so I doubt very much if that is the reason but just in case the fitter was half asleep, when you have each wheel bolted on, before letting it down, spin it by hand and look for a bulge or an out of shape tyre. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Hi Ron,

They come off a new Evoque unless the stealers have substituted them.

I am told the dealer had them for a couple of weeks before the owner/seller picked them up.

There does not appear to be any damage to tyres or rims.

Tomorrow I will check each wheel on the car to see if it is the one wheel causing the trouble or more than one.

The temptation is to try and recover my money from the seller but with tyre fitters cost and 500 miles round trip total will be well out of pocket even with a full refund. Big Cry

I have bought a few wheel and tyre sets off ebay in the past and never had a problem.
Although this is the first time I have bought deflated tyres due to no valves in place.

Cheers

Tom

The valves have been removed because they were part of the tyre pressure monitoring system so when they were removed the balance would have been way out. If you can find nothing obviously out of shape on any of the wheels/tyres, it's GOT to be balancing. There's nothing inside the tyres is there? (Water perhaps if they'd been left out in the rain?). I've balanced some pretty buckled wheels in my time and never really had any issues. Are they using sick-on weights or a combination of stick-on and clip-on on the far inner and inner edge of the rim? Sometimes if you try to bodge it and just do it statically using one large clip on weight (cheaper) on the inside rim edge you can get problems.

Edit: To just remove the tyre pressure sensors, they wouldn't have probably taken the whole tyre off, they would have just broken the bead seating near the valve and unbolted it. If whoever fitted new valves dodn't lubricate the tyre/rim, it might not have seated properly when inflated. Look carefully at the outer sidewall when you spin it to see if everything is in place.

If it's all okay with your old wheels back on, it should be pretty easy to correct by a tyre fitter unless he's a complete novice. Get it balanced elsewhere! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Hi Steve,

Would you believe it. I picked up a voice mail from the seller last night 2330 suggesting that water was in the tyres when they were dropped off from the dealers !!!

When I read your post earlier I had a Eureka moment. Smile

This could be the problem so I am off to the tyre fitters shortly to remove the tyres completely.

Hoping for a Niagra moment when they break the bead...lol that was Niangra not Viagra by the way.

Cheers

Update.

Thx Steve.

Had all four tyres removed and I wish I had taken a wetsuit!

Probably a couple of pints of water in each.

Because the inside bead was not broken there was no sign of water when we picked them up and drove 120 miles home.

If only I had suggested removing the tyre to fit the new valves non of the hassle would have happened.

Still all well that ends well even if it did cost me another fitting and balance fee.

Thx all for your input.

What would we do without a wonderful forum like this.

Cheers

Pleased to have helped but I'm baffled as to how they got the TPM units out and fitted new valves without breaking the bead - both have to be removed and fitted from inside the rim. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Hi Steve,

What I think has happened.

The dealer has broken the front bead and removed the TPMS. They then eventually returned them to the ebay seller with no valve inserted and the front bead open.

The water must have got in via the front bead assuming either the dealer or seller have stored them for a while outside in heavy rain.

I picked them up on Sunday unaware that they had been stored outside and although the front bead was open no water escaped as I laid them face up in the car for transportation.

I never gave water ingress a thought nor did my tyre fitter as they just inserted a new valve via the front bead and then inflated and balanced them with the water inside.

Oh well you live and learn Embarassed

Cheers

Tom
