Yes you can bump start a FL2 manual but a sure way to snap a drive belt is to jump start a car |

Yes, I guess it is a fairly stressful thing to do to an engine!

Why ? All the belts are turned by the engine crankshaft- which is fairly slowly until the engine starts. So no different from a normal start up. Diesels are hard to start because of the high compression - you cant push them yourself esaily and need a tow usually before they will start. Jules |

When my previous car refused to start due to a flat battery I called out the AA he mentioned he had lost count how many snapped belts he had seen due to people trying to bump start cars. |

I’m no engineer but it sounds plausible to me...

I have heard this one before but can't see any logic in it. The belts are carrying no more stress than when normally working so why should it be true? I have bump started cars and tractors in the past and have done it in 3rd or 4th gear and never lost a belt. I would have thought that the glowplugs and ECU might not be functioning with a totally duff battery though. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto 5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto Now Discovery Sport P250 MHEV SE |

belts also jump a tooth or snap if weak,on initial start up,espcially if they are old or contaiminated, its the instant pull on the belt ,and more so if tow started in a low gear, its not advised by the rac. |

I have bump started my Freelander 2 on a couple of occasions last winter when my previous battery was starting to fail.
