Can you bump start a manual FL2?

Apols if this is already on the Forum somewhere, I‘ve searched without success.

Can you push or roll start a manual FL2? If so, how? Not that I am planning on needing to do it, it’s just that I’ve never had a vehicle before where it might not be possible! On the 200tdi you could remove the barrel from the fuel cut-off solenoid and it would roll start pretty easily, but with all the electronics going on with the FL2 and a push-button start, I’m guessing it is no longer possible? 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

2010 MY FL2 TD4e GS - Now gone at 199,500 miles, about 135,000 of them mine.
‘93 Defender 110 200TDi CSW
‘87 Defender 90 4 cyl Petrol
‘83 110 CSW V8 - best ever!
Range Rover 2-door V8 (not sure of year - 4-speed box and vacuum diff switch)

Yes, I guess it is a fairly stressful thing to do to an engine!

Presumably to do this on any vehicle with a push-button start, you need to have it in “ignition on” mode, but it’s not necessary to push the button as you let out the clutch? And as usual highest gear. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Why ?

All the belts are turned by the engine crankshaft- which is fairly slowly until the engine starts. So no different from a normal start up.

Diesels are hard to start because of the high compression - you cant push them yourself esaily and need a tow usually before they will start. Jules

When my previous car refused to start due to a flat battery I called out the AA he mentioned he had lost count how many snapped belts he had seen due to people trying to bump start cars.

I’m no engineer but it sounds plausible to me...

Using the starter, the engine turns over slowly until it fires. Even if it is only a couple of revolutions before it catches, everything has at least started to move before the engine fires. Once it fires, the car is at rest, with the clutch dis-engaged, or in neutral and the engine is running at tick-over speed - perhaps 800-1200 rpm.

Bump starting you go form the equivalent of complete stop to perhaps 1800 rpm within the time taken to let the clutch out, with the engine on full load as it struggles to match engine speed and wheel speed. Not sure what components are stressed by this, but it can’t be good to be doing it routinely. 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

I have heard this one before but can't see any logic in it. The belts are carrying no more stress than when normally working so why should it be true? I have bump started cars and tractors in the past and have done it in 3rd or 4th gear and never lost a belt.

I would have thought that the glowplugs and ECU might not be functioning with a totally duff battery though. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

belts also jump a tooth or snap if weak,on initial start up,espcially if they are old or contaiminated,its the instant pull on the belt ,and more so if tow started in a low gear,its not advised by the rac.

I have bump started my Freelander 2 on a couple of occasions last winter when my previous battery was starting to fail.

As stated in previous replies my battery had enough power for the 'ignition on' function which happens when you press the stop/start button without depressing the clutch. Once moving I then released the clutch as gently as I could in second gear and the car fortunately started up pretty quickly for me.

Not a scenario I would personally use through choice but equally not one I'd be too scared off using again either if the need arose......
