I've attached some pictures to show the difference. You can see the foam in the second picture but it's much easier to see when looking at the car.

Oh right yes that looks like what they put in between panels i thought you meant like the expanding foam stuff It's most likely right but has moved a bit ? |

Just checked my MY10 and it has foam inserts in both sides. |

The more I investigate the more it appears my car has had quite a few body panels replaced in the past

The foam is probably just sound insulation.
