Heart surgery

Had a new left knee 18 months ago - advised by some "experts" that I couldn't drive for 12 weeks, because I couldn't operate the brake in the event of an emergency - FFS it's an auto, still same automated response, they have been told 12 weeks so it is in their bible.

Anyway long chat with doctor and I mentioned driving, his take with an auto and left leg was give it 4 weeks for all the stuff from the operation to clear my system and I should be fine - and I was, OK Lands End to John O Groats would be pushing it, but to & from work would be fine and I was OK.

Just been "lucky" enough to get a quintuple bypass (and boy does it hurt)
Same 12 week response from so called experts, now granted I won't be twiddling a steering wheel any time soon, but why are they insisting that I inform my insurance about a Heart operation, but not about a knee operation?

If mine was a manual, then a new knee would affect my driving, more than a few heart grafts.

Any Ideas why insurance "Must" be informed - or is it just another, it's in my bible, therefore you HAVE to do it.

Already lost patience with heart Hitler, - can't drive, can't go to garden centre, must have various inoculations (bloody stupid as wife on chemo), must eat oily fish 5 days a week, only porridge for breakfast, no more chips, gym twice a week. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

wish you both well and amazing what can be done these days.

problem is insurance companies are always looking for reasons not to pay out.

so the more you tell them the less they have to body swerve a claim.

Cheers gents

It's been a Censored year so far
Although some relatives keep saying "well Gill might not have found the cancer" and "A heart attack might have killed you"
Funnily enough we don't feel lucky because lucky is not having cancer, or not needing a bypass.

Don't get me wrong the lads and lasses at the Bolton and Manchester hospitals have been fantastic. But seeing your beloved curled up in a ball crying in pain while you go to work is bloody hard, and I am told seeing your other half plumbed into ventilators while you yourself feel fragile is not for the fait heated.

But the main question is why do the insurance company need to know?, once recovered I should be better than before. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

My personal view is if you pass the DVLA requirements I have just read then surely any insurance company should not have an issue as you are "A OK".

Cheers Bob

Personally. I will not drive until the doctor says I can, the DVLA seem happy with that, so the insurance company can hardly argue that I was reckless, or that I was a greater risk than before the surgery. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

I went through this last year,

The only question your insurer can ask you is " have you ever notified the DVLA about a condition " .

If you have a notifiable condition or had a notifiable event the doctor will tell you to fill in the appropriate forms for review by the DVLA medical department, who
will then contact the patients specialist directly. It is definitely the patients responsibility to contact DVLA

If the condition is not notifiable the Specialist will just follow DVLA advice on telling his patient " you must refrain from driving for X weeks , but no need to notify" . Any one not following this advice would be uninsured .

https://www.gov.uk/health-conditions-and-driving

If a person does have to notify DVLA the investigation can take literally months, but with approval from their specialist they can resume driving until DVLA make a decision on whether or not your license is restricted ( might be say , valid for one year, valid for two years etc, or even DVLA notified no restrictions ) .
Once a person has that decision they have to tell their insurer, or if they have a renewal they have to say condition notified awaiting decision.

Once you have a decision if you are cleared to drive the insurer can not discriminate and load a policy. I have a 170mph Superbike insured on " notified no restrictions " as well as the Scooby Thumbs Up

Just one thing of note if someone goes onto a restricted car license, any mini-bus or 7.5 tonne entitlement is cancelled. 2009 GS Auto Zermatt Silver - Sold June 21 after 10 years of ownership

That's what I like about this forum, yes we all take the P*** from time to time, but ask a serious question, and there is a depth of knowledge that you will get sensible relevant answer's.

Not a medical requirement but if you wish to keep the above entitlements after your 70th birthday you need to inform The DVLA a minimum of six months before the birthday or you will loose them. You also may have to have a medical if you have had any previous heart conditions.

This is even more important if you wish to retain a LGV licence as know a guy who lost his job as the DVLA to not publish this requirement on the licence renewal paperwork.
