As long as we play the game and do the same thing on the French side and inspect very vehicle and check who's coming in then that's how it's done properly.
I have always found it very slack at the ports.

Problem is that because of Schengen ours is the ONLY border where they are allowed to check everyone (possibly also Switzerland by now). So if they have to pretend to do something about border security it's the only one they can mess about with. And being French they do it in a French way (you have to wait sir? That is a problem for you). The fact that all their terrorists so far have come from Belgium or from France itself is conveniently ignored. A couple of friends have pointed out that all the checks magically disappear when it's time for coffee/lunch breaks. Could be worse - the last time I crossed from Austria to Hungary (both in the EU) the Hungarian border guards simply closed the border for half an hour while they had their breakfast. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

And as England is the last real frontier, all the other Border Guards got made redundant so there is just the one froggy left to do them! Everyone can spread it - Anyone can catch it. Stay home - the life you save can be your own!

In these days of Political Correctness it may be considered some what inappropriate to refer to our French cousins as froggy,I believe the correct term is garlic eating surrender monkeys.

The last time I came through Calais they were, a 2 hour delay because there was only one UK Immigration Officer on duty.

Nowt wrong with garlic, as to 'surrender monkeys' as you obviously didn't pay attention at school, I suggest you Google Verdun.

The French government has to at least appear to be doing something about security, their jobs are on the line. Scared people will vote them out for others who are willing to take a tougher stance on things like border control. We've seen it out here, it's a political football preying on fear and we haven't even had the terrorist attacks that France has had to endure. For the average Frenchman, rational thinking goes out the window, it matters little that the terrorists are virtually home grown. You have to admit they've been hit pretty hard.
The Brexit vote will mean you'll have to start getting used to long queues again. We were a bit miffed the first time we visited the UK, having to stand in a long queue at Heathrow while EU passport holders went straight through. The Queen is our boss too.
