I'm not sure about these memorials for wars of a bygone era, Trafalgar Day is about Nelson but not about the others who died, Waterloo is also celebrated but not the loss of life mourned or remembered.
The Somme was a disaster, run by those on both sides who had no idea of the carnage they could create with modern weapons they failed to understand, and when the carnage started couldn't or wouldn't reassess. Are we mourning the loss of life, the stupidity of the command or the naivety of those who who did their bidding?.
Nothing was learned from that war except that most would die in WW2 in armoured metal boxes or being surrounded by metal boxes and die. WW2 taught us that science and technology was at such an advanced state that future wars would annihilate the whole world including the leaders.
The problem of wars since the 1600's was that the bidders and leaders took further and further backward steps away from the action, they weren't leaders, rather pushers, now in any war the bidders have the cyber weapon at the end of their nose and it is lethal which makes them think at least twice my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
