Witter detachable tow bar

I have seen a Witter Detachable Tow Kit R41AQ including single electrics for a good price on Ebay. I have quite good DIY skills but wondered if it is difficult to fit this kit myself.
Appreciate and good advice from anyone who has attempted to fit this tow kit and if it was successful and any pit falls I should be aware of. I have heard that once a toe bar and electrics have been fitted it must me re programmed by LR but not sure if this is correct or not.

If the item for sale says 'bypass' in it's advert then it will not be a dedicated loom and a software change won't be needed. I see you have an 'Auto' box so a dedicated loom will be an advantage to you as it will adapt your cars gear changes to towing loads automatically.

Also bypass relay will not allow a bulb check or give indication on the dash or disable rear parking sensors when hitched, then again if its only for a small trailer none of this really matters.

Yes it does say bypass in the description Sad . Guess as i will be towing a 24ft caravan i should get the dedicated electrics then. Maybe it is better then to have a qualified tow bar fitter do the job as LR want too much money IMO.

Yes, LR do take the Censored in what they charge. I used a local to me 'biggish' outfit called 'Towone Trailers' to install a removable 'Witter' with dedicated electrics also supplied by 'Witter', at the time I believe I paid around £350 but believe they charge around £440 now including the programming. So it still isn't cheap Sad

Still better than £740 what LR wanted to charge!

Not sure whether that's a good price but if you have a MY2013 as your post suggests the electrics are cheaper compared to pre-facelift cars and are 'plug and play', I'd make sure that is in the quote.... no need to sort software which should keep the cost down. Witter bars are not difficult to fit and don't need bumper removal or cutting. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

I eventually fitted a Witter Detachable Tow Kit R41AQ which was quite easy, cost £169. Instead of removing the rear bumper just needed to drill two holes under the nearside rear reflector to torque a couple of bolts. Bought a set of genuine single 13 pin electrices from LR £84 and you are right they are just plug and play and just needed a couple of extra fuses fitted. Job done and just taken the caravan to the dealers for its first service and all went well. So for a grand o total of £253 have a decent tow bar and genuine LR electrics.

Wittier tow bar

Well done Topaz, it's good that you've added the detail which will help future readers if this post.
If I may add an extra comment, if you are dexterous enough with the wrists and fingers you can get away with not drilling the two holes behind the reflector as the nuts can be reached once you know where to feel / find them. Doing this by freel with a ratchet spanner is ok for experienced mechanics but of course torquing up to a specific figure is impossible.
.
I've had the Witter detachable for 9 months and are very happy with the choice.
.
Kind regards from Fred.

Ditto fredastaire's comment on not needing to drill holes behind the reflector as you can reach up behind the bumper instead. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

Re: Witter detachable towbar.

Anybody had any problems with these wearing at all? I've had mine less than a year and it appears to be worn at the 'hook' on the top. Works OK when first inserted, but after a little while it starts squeaking with the van on the back, then on inspection there is a bit of play in the neck. Doesn't appear to be the Alko pads as these are new.

Will be contacting Witter for feedback.

LoP

Re: Witter "detachable towbar."

The 58 plate D3 we bought recently had a wobbly swan neck "detachable" tow bar. I was so concerned about how much it wobbled that I tried to remove it. After days of lubing with WD40 and such like and repeated beatings the locking pin just wouldn't budge. Located a new one on e-bay so I cut the pin off. I do think what the problem was that even though it was detachable the previous owner didn't. I am surprised considering the cost of replacement and the so called ease of removal. Still the new one will be going on with copious amounts of copper-slip.

Cheers

I ran a Witter detachable for nearly 3years towing a caravan, quiet as a mouse with no play. Dealer put another Witter on my new one as part of the deal, i chose Witter again because of this.
