Humming noise

I have just started getting a humming noise from my FL2 which has got slightly noisier as the week has gone on. It sounds like tyre noise but its not and I am a bit concerned. It must be drivetrain/transmission as it is still there when I press the clutch and freewheel and the noise/drone lowers in tone as I slow down.

Anyone got any idea what it might be?

How sure are you that it's not tyres - does it vary with road surface?
FL2s are very prone to tyre noise which can come on as tyres wear.

How worn are the tyres? I had awful noise from a set of Wranglers when down to about 4mm.....new tyres and all quiet. Don't ask me why but... 2011 SD4 HSE Auto

I changed out a rear wheel bearing which made no difference to my rear noise, ditching the Wranglers cured it immediately😀 (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

I would say that it is the tyres as humming noise is speed dependent and also diffs whine.

The tyres are down to about 4/5 mm and are General Grabber a/t's.

The car has been silent since they were fitted just over a year (and 36000 miles) ago, and was fine when i drove it to Norwich, but as soon as I started driving it home the noise was very noticeable. If it was tyre noise would it not have gradually got noisier over the past month or so?

Just had a transfer box fail.

Whining noise that when louder as the speed increased. When the box failed the only noise I could hear was the wind in the roof rails - I had forgotten how loud the rails were.
This discounts the tyres in may case, also the diff, as they are both still turning. The Haldex and prop shaft are the next most likely as neither were turning, my guess is the prop shaft bearings, and I will change them one day.

Fitted new transfer box and noise is back Crying or Very sad Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner
