Parts alone are best part of £250. Add in 4 hours (ish) of labour, and the dealer price is not far out...

Wow you can nearly get a new diff for that, its like all these posh cars its not buying thats expensive its maintaining it that is if you dont do it yourself.
Repairs still cost the price of a new one even though yours could be unpteen years old.

There is an element of you get what you pay for here:

    1. Main Dealer Labour Rates are higher because of the costs associated with keeping technicians trained and up to speed. Other mechanics may (not always of course) rely on experience.
    2. Main Dealers have higher overheads
    3. The parts used at a main dealer will be genuine Land Rover Parts. An indy will probably use factored parts.
    4. The dealer (and Land Rover) will stand behind the repair usually without quibble and the cost of doing that is built into the price.
So yes, on the face of it a main dealer is expensive, but there are reasons for that, plus the margins to support the business need to be higher. It's whether you're prepared to pay for that or not.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, and I am sure there are many examples of good indies as well as bad main dealers, but it's not necessarily comparing apples with apples. Plus there's the age thing too. My 1 year old Metropolis goes into the main dealer but the 13 year old Clio goes into the local mechanics on the aerodrome and is maintained with factored parts.

150k for the diesels which is when the haldex, diff and auto box fluids also get done, not sure about petrols

I wouldn't like to let mine go to 150k though and would probably change it around 110-120k tops

Out of the 7 independent small garages, 4 of them quote £1092 Shocked
Think I'll stick with my LR dealer or LR specialist. FL2 now gone and have a couple of items left for sale:-

Well it is not as if Land Rover actually make any parts themselves. Using a decent make Gates, Contitech etc will
be every bit as good. Who knows one of these two might actually make the parts for LR.
