AA or RAC

My insurance is up for renewal & I've decided that this time I'm not taking breakdown cover with, as you only get a very basic cover that's more expensive than going direct with either if the above, so who would you recommend for a basic breakdown cover for 1 vehicle, AA is a bit more expensive & only 2 call outs a year but does have a lot of member Benefits in money off at places, rac is cheaper by about £3 , no Benefits but I can't find a limit on call outs .

Try Green Flag for quote.
A motorsport colleague/friend who runs a large independent recovery business advised me on Green Flag.
Best cover and price when I checked online.
I will need cover from later next month when FL2 is 3 years old. Buying LR warranty but added LR assist is extortionate. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

When I had RAC a few years back it was 3 call outs in one year, I was with them for 21 years and never used them once.

Worth looking at the package Nationwide offer with some accounts.

My warranty is running out and looked at recovery options as the FL2 is worth keeping when compared to Eurotrash.

They charge £10 a month and give some interest up to £2,500 in the account benefits include breakdown cover for UK and Europe and Travel Insurance etc for my wife and I.
My last annual travel insurance renewal was heading North of £200 and excluded the good old USA and ski-ing so add in what the AA or RAC would charge for me its a good £120 spent. Very Happy

GEM motoring assist seems to be getting the best reviews and good deals too.

Have a look at autoaid. I've signed up again this year after my 3 year warranty ran out. You pay on credit card and claim back but cheque is usually with you in a week. I've used it twice with a previous car.

I have that account but still have RAC cover, the problem being that Nationwide do not offer a recovery upgrade option.
I had visions of breaking down far from home and being towed to a random garage and being tucked up due to my lack of options.

Just looking at the link and they appeared to have upgraded the cover to recovery and home assist.

+1 for Nationwide account - travel and breakdown insurance worth every penny of the £120 annual fee.

If not interested in changing bank accounts, very possible I imagine, then would second Green Flag as an option.

I found AA expensive and ever more costly at each renewal - decided the charges were simply not worth it.

Actually you don't need to change accounts, just make sure you put £1000 in every month (no problem if you want to take it out again!) I think Nationwide is one of the banks offering money to change your account if a friend recommends - worth checking out. They also, like most banks, do a good rate of interest on a "regular savings" account. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.
