My insurance is up for renewal & I've decided that this time I'm not taking breakdown cover with, as you only get a very basic cover that's more expensive than going direct with either if the above, so who would you recommend for a basic breakdown cover for 1 vehicle, AA is a bit more expensive & only 2 call outs a year but does have a lot of member Benefits in money off at places, rac is cheaper by about £3 , no Benefits but I can't find a limit on call outs . |

When I had RAC a few years back it was 3 call outs in one year, I was with them for 21 years and never used them once. |

GEM motoring assist seems to be getting the best reviews and good deals too. |

Have a look at autoaid. I've signed up again this year after my 3 year warranty ran out. You pay on credit card and claim back but cheque is usually with you in a week. I've used it twice with a previous car.

I have that account but still have RAC cover, the problem being that Nationwide do not offer a recovery upgrade option. I had visions of breaking down far from home and being towed to a random garage and being tucked up due to my lack of options. |

Just looking at the link and they appeared to have upgraded the cover to recovery and home assist. |

+1 for Nationwide account - travel and breakdown insurance worth every penny of the £120 annual fee.

I've always been happy with Britannia Rescue - they use local garages for their repair/recovery services and ae most helpful. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Actually you don't need to change accounts, just make sure you put £1000 in every month (no problem if you want to take it out again!) I think Nationwide is one of the banks offering money to change your account if a friend recommends - worth checking out. They also, like most banks, do a good rate of interest on a "regular savings" account. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone 300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease 200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France FR2 TD4 GS - Gone FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge. |
