My 2011 69k miles Freelander extended warranty runs out at the end of March. I always said I would get rid of it then but I really can't get inspired by anything else out there so I will probably keep it for another year and buy another extended warranty for about £800. Or should I put that towards something else? #decisiontime

I have the financial means to get virtually anything I want but can't bring myself to spend more than about £18-20k - probably an age thing.

The odds of having a sudden and terminal breakdown is fairly remote - more likely a whining diff or clutch release bearing/dmf . If so and your car is 5 years plus then the likelihood of the LR dealer taking a test drive is pretty slim. I p/e mine last year and notwithstanding cleaning and polishing the car the dealer only gave a cursory look and didn't even look inside nor start it. He said they wouldn't offer a warranty so 5 year plus vehicles go straight to auction.

So keep for another year and then p/e for a my 15 HSE or similar Thumbs Up MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

I work on the basis of never buying extended warranties on goods be it cars or white type goods etc I buy from new. At some point it may catch me up I guess but with what I have saved I reckon I will still be in front. That said the FL2 now doing more miles wont miss a service as that is tempting fate. Whistle

I agree and I have a policy of never buying extended warranties on anything. The exception has been our 4 Freelanders, one was OK, the second had no warranty and cost me over £1200 in repairs, No 3 (with warranty) would be nearer £3k and current one over £1500 (with warranty) ie far in excess of what the warranties have cost. As cars get more complex and require more specialised diagnostic equipment to do the simplest of jobs I see no option in the future. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

England 2009 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Zermatt Silver

When the wife was looking for a replacement for her DS3 (that's the Citroen version) we went to look at an Audi A1 at one of their garages. I was in my usual sunday scruffs. The garage was deserted but I had to go up to the salesman and he literally forced himself to come out to show my wife a car. Thing is she would have bought one (through the NHS car lease scheme). Her new car comes on Friday - another bloody Citroen DS3. Censored

Just had a letter and brochure this morning from Land Rover asking if I want to take another year of extended warranty. It's gone up in price a bit and the quote is as follows

extended warranty £795 with assistance £945

select extended warranty £505 with assistance £655

both include MOT insurance

You can pay monthly.

At nearly £1k for a year makes me think I could be spending that on another vehicle. Food for thought. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

It just says that car must be under 10 yrs old and 100k miles and must have been serviced in accordance with manufacturer otherwise it will need to be serviced by a dealer. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I bought my current HSE privately without warranty. Bought the extended warranty through Duckworths & they did a "pre warranty inspection" (for want of a better description) which it passed. Thumbs Up Car had a full LRSH but warranty proved its worth in year one - developed crankshaft front oil leak & a haldex software issue which took a lot of investigation to run to ground. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Interesting reading. A number of people have said they would be uncomfortable in owning an LR product without a warranty, and I presume they replace the vehicle when the warranty runs out. Even with the warranty extension that would make it 3 to 5 years old. When considering the cost of paying for repairs after warranty... has anyone compared this to the vehicles depreciation? The first 3 or 4 years see a lot come off the value. Depreciation starts to slow down after this which should more than counteract the average yearly repair bills. Offset this against what you have to pay to get a newer vehicle... Well that's my thinking but I have a hawkeye to help too and plan to do some of the repairs myself. Hippo's videos - Honorary Tratterer

Hippo, I think you are saying that you either pay for depreciation which decreases asymptotically down to it's scrap value or for repairs which increase exponentially and that beyond a certain age repairs become the dominant factor. The question is, when is the cross over point? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Scotland 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

My current FL2 SD GS Auto will be 3 years old in April, currently @30k miles. The 3rd service is part of sales deal so I have, after much consideration, decided to spend a few!! pounds, 3rd annual service is Free, then MOT, Brake fluid change, Air con service and LR Warranty for 1 year. All in less than £1,000.
FL is totally unmarked and has Factory tints, side steps, full size alloy spare(unused) fog lights, auto headlights and auto wipers. Also has 18" Evoque Alloys with 6mm Pirelli Scorpion Verde Tyres.
Dealers had a 64 plate FL2 SD Tech SE (ex LR) 14,000 miles £27,695, they offered me £16000 for mine.!!!!!
A Discovery Sport with auto box and 2.0 Ingenium engine 2nd hand starts about £36k.

I looked Sportage, iX35, Forrester, C-RV, Merc GLA,

run out Tiguan and Mazda CX3 and 5.
Best deals were on Tiguan.
A surprising vehicle and possibly the best of the lot value for money was the Mokka SE Auto. Just a wee bit too small. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

I said in another thread I would be going for the new Volvo V90 D5 AWD when it's time to change my Disco, but I gave it a good clean inside and out today and when I stood back to admire my hard graft, I thought there's no other car I would be happy with.

Now where do I sign for a D5 Whistle 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Car programs normally say the most cost efficient time to replace a new car is when it's 2 years old. I don't know if this is true. I would guess the depreciation slope has a lesser gradient at 4 years plus. I would guess the 4 year stage is the key point for price change. Not sure what peeps are paying to upgrade on here but I would be surprised if the cost of wear and tear plus some failures over a period of time would be more expensive than the depreciation in early years.
It may be easier to compare the cost of buying a younger vehicle (including px) and dividing the cost by the age difference in what you sell, to what you buy. £9k difference = 3k each year for 3 years. Hippo's videos - Honorary Tratterer
