Hi folks anyone tell me is it possible to change alternator clutch without removing from engine, and if so any tips, or special tools required. Cheers

In the link above are presented (through pictures) all tools needed and how they are used in order to remove that clutch from the alternator shaft, in situ.

I didn't know there was a clutch in the alternator drive. What is its purpose?
I have one on one of my bikes but that is just a breakaway clutch to prevent overloading the drive (excessive torque) as the revs can rise so quickly. Unlikely to pose a problem on a 4 pot diesel I suspect. Surprised

From Topix:

Quote:
The generator pulley incorporates a one-way clutch that reduces Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH), and improves the life of the accessory drive belt. The one-way clutch allows the belt to drive the pulley without slip occurring, but prevents the generator from driving the belt during transients in engine speed ('belt whip') due to the high rotational inertia of the generator internal components.

So the opposite of the bike really - used when the revs drop more quickly than generator inertia allows.

Interesting. I suspect it's a way of buffering the drive from rapid angular velocity changes at the crank at low revs. A bit like the decoupling effect of the dmf! Does the i6 have one?

No. From my knowledge, on i6 is a mechanical connection to the crankshaft through some helical gears and then a direct coupling.

So perhaps not needed in an inherently smoother engine?
