The rear window heating elements are only printed onto the surface of the glass and thus are very vunerable to being scratched and damaged breaking the circuit, especially if you carry large loads that might move and rub on the rear window or say animals.

In all honesty, no I haven't, although it lights up when I either press it or the other button which turns on the whole demisting system (fan etc) |

Have you put a multimeter on the power supply end at the fuse to see if there is voltage?

I had to have a new rear window fitted on my freelander as I scratched the central lines that carries the power to the rear window.

Except those vertical lines aren't for the demister circuit, they are radio/tmc antennae.
