Odd Tyre Wear

All,

Just checked my tyre wear this afternoon (prior to ordering two new tyres) and found the nearside (left) front and rear tyres to be wearing on the outside edge. Wear on the front is minimal, about 0.5mm from side to side but the rear is 1.00mm side to side (I don’t recall hitting any kerbs etc. causing the wheel alignment to change). Offside is OK.

I had a four wheel alignment check done on my last FL2 because of basically the same issue. Interestingly, the garage I used quoted different alignment figures from their database to those quoted by Land Rover. They agreed to use the Land Rover alignment figures I supplied and I never had another problem with uneven tyre wear on that car. Unfortunately I think the garage has now changed hands, a pity as they only charged me £30.

I have Pirelli Scorpion Zero’s all round on my current FL2 and Goodyear Wranglers on the old one.

I know there are a few posts on this forum about wheel alignment but has anyone experienced this on one side (nearside) only?

Thanks,

Chris Gone:

Do you go round a lot of roundabouts? Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Scientific conclusion to the issue then!
I’ll get the alignment checked at the weekend when I get the tyres. Gone:

My front near side tyre has worn around the edge by about 2 cm, I checked the tread depth and it's at 3 MM., rest of the tyre is 7mm. I went to my local independent tyre place and they said that it was due to roundabouts, they didn't think the tracking needed checking at all. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Maybe an occasional trip to France is in order so you go round them the other way to even the wear out in future, on one of those booze cruises?

Not sure if people are being serious - I've also noted a lot more wear on the outer edges of my 57 FL2, was worried that the age of the car was catching up with it and the alignment was going. I popped onto the forum to ask what the cause might be, and I must say I didn't expect the answer to be 'roundabouts'.

It appears - assuming no-one's taking the mickey - I can blame my dodgy cornering technique instead.

Hi Mattie

There is a lot of micky taking here, it serves two purposes:
(1) The topic is refreshed (brought back to the top of the forum) until a suitable answer is found.
(2) The friendly banter seems to reduce the amount of flaming seen on more "serious" web sites.

If you live in Milton Keynes there are a lot of roundabouts, and it does cause significant wear - on all cars.

The FL2 has 4 wheel alignment not found on "normal" cars, this actually is quite robust - think flying through the air a couple of feet off the floor several times robust, but as the result of repair work to suspension / steering, as a result of an accident, as a result of sometimes poor attention to detail during build, the 4 wheel alignment can be out. This will cause uneven wear, and tyres at £130 a corner that can be expected to last 35K, can be ruined in 10k.

If you have a concern, take the car to someone who specialises in 4x4 alignment - not Kwick fit etc. The £30-£60 is less than half the price of one tyre.

Try going around them the other way Laughing

But trying to be serious - id expect wear on the outer edges of the fronts but Ive not seen it on the rears on any of my previous 5 FLs. The fact it is only on the left of both front and rears is a bit unusual in my opinion , so Id get it checked. Jules

Same issue with our FL2. As it drives so well, corners and roundabouts are taken more quickly than they would be compared to our Disco 3.

Change your driving style and slow down a little for said roundabouts Thumbs Up

I think you'd have to do a lot of high speed roundabouts to get wear on the left rear and not the right rear tyre. Maybe the OP does lives in an area of high roundabout density. I dont and get uneven wear only on the outer edges of the fronts. Jules

Wear on one side only is pretty unusual in my experience, and wear on one side of the rear is a new one on me. If we assume that the car has not been in a serious accident and badly repaired (the obvious answer), my next thought would be that the wheels had been swapped from front off to rear near side, and that the original wear had been to the outside of both front wheels. This would not need to have happened recently. I suppose it's also possible if the tracking is a bit out that you would steer to the right to counter road camber, and that might wear the front near side, but not the rear. Apart from that I'm stumped.
Pirellis have been flagged up before on the forum for shoulder wear. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

I've contacted our local Land Rover specialist to see if I should get it checked before I get new tyres fitted. I'll replay any feedback.

The difference in wear across the tyres is not huge, I'd estimate at only 1 to 2mm, but as they're getting close to the replacement level it's noticeable given the wear indicator blocks as reference. I've got some Goodyear SUV tyres fitted, I might try a different brand to see if they wear a little bit better.

The car's not had any crash repair or impacts - it's been owned since new by the family - and the tyres haven't been swapped over since I fitted them earlier this year (a contract in West Midlands has put over 20K on the car over the summer, much of it up and down the A429 from Bath which has quite a few twists and turns and a fair few roundabouts). No idea if this has contributed, I don't drive particularly quickly but there are a fair few tight turns on the road.
