Boot/Load Space - Light replacement

The boot light in my Freelander has expired.

I have looked at the previous posts on the subject, for example, Searched Post which is inspiring, however I want to keep the replacement simple. Although as I write this the ideas formulating in my mind as to what constitutes a simple installation are becoming more elaborate.

So, what am I trying to achieve which replacing the blown blub doesn't provide?

I would like some more light,
It must be a diffused light I don't want exposed LED's
I don't want it to rival the a small sun.
I don't want to cut headlining, but I would go as far as cutting into the plastic boot sides.
12v so I can cut into the original boot light supply

Poking around Amazon and Maplin are drawing blanks so far. Do you have any ideas?

i bought a pair of LED strips from that well known auction site for about £4, and mounted one on the headlining just inside the boot lid. Fed a wire down through the rubber seal and into the back of the existing light (which I also replaced with an LED bulb)

I know you say you don't want to cut the headlining (and you don't actually have to) but I cut a little slit in the headlining, which wouldn't be noticeable if I later removed the set up in order to feed the cable through. There is a pic in my gallery of the boot open at night to give you an idea of the results.

Hi Rog,

You have the right idea with the amount of cutting that I would be prepared to do.

Was this cut into the boot light feed ?

yeh just a straight cut into the wires at the back of the standard boot light, took me about 10 mins to do the lot.

no visible wiring other than 4mm of cable out the headlining onto the LED strip but if you place the strip a couple of inches back the roof slopes up so it cant be seen from the rear and like i said its just a little nick in the lining and push the cable through it. you would have to look very very closely to see it if it if the LED strip was removed later.

light comes on with the standard light and fades down with it.

a really useful very cheap and easy modification. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Yes would appreciate the link. Did you use the self adhesive tape to fix the light? I have already replaced the boot light with a canbus compatable LED, you say there was nothing else to do other than splice into the wiring?

I didn't use a canbus compatible strip as far as I remember, so I assumed the boot light wasn't part of the bus.

The self adhesive backing on the strip did work for a while but failed when the weather was warm so I just cut a bit of double sided tape to size.

I went for cool white but there are other variations of white and other colours, price was £5.99 for 2 strips sorry not £4
Only fitted 1 strip in mine and fitted the other in my sons car.

you could always fit the other strip under the bonnet, I think they are waterproof so should be ok when you turn your FL2 into a boat next time Laughing

i like the idea of those led lights in the boot, the current one in mine is useless to be fair.

sorry to hijack the thread, what is meant by canbus compatibly, i see this mentioned a lot when discussing led lights.

thanks

This is were my mind starts to over complicate the replacement of a simple blown bulb.

One of my colleagues at work who loves a gadget came in with one of these last week.

Thinking about the 'ever-ready' torch that LR NUT fitted to the boot of his car, I am wondering if I can do the same or similar for a fraction of the cost. The lamp will be permanently charging in the boot, working as a boot light but also removable if needed. The compromise, I will have to turn the lamp on and off manually but that isn't a show stopper.

I'm no sparky, but I would have thought taking a feed off the headlight switched bt the bonnet latch would be possible so it is then controlled by the dash switch but only on when the bonnet is open

Why not save yourself a fortune and fit one of these - you can use the torch to probe the unlit boot areas!! Whistle
