FL2 vs DS drivetrain

Does anyone know how similar the DS is underneath to an FL2? I know that the rear suspension is different but have LR used the same diff and drive train? ie can we expect the same problems as an FL2 if we buy a DS? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

The DS haldex is 4KG lighter other than that it's the same. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

In simple terms unless you specify "Active Driveline" there is no difference apart from the Haldex being Gen V which is a simplified version of Gen IV fitted to later FL2.
"Active Driveline" does away with the Haldex and is replaced by a "reportedly" LR
designed system of clutch's at the rear and front engine output shaft. MY15

As above the Haldex is now Gen V, and only time will tell what effect the weight saving has on reliability! But are we really sure the diff is exactly the same? Have they really not addressed the nose bearing issue? Seems hard to believe they wouldn't do something about such a common fault.

Active driveline not only has three clutches (one at the front and one for each rear wheel, allowing the entire rear driveline to be disconnected), it also aiui does away with the rear diff altogether, relying on the clutches to provide any required slip. Seems horribly over-complicated just to save a small amount of fuel, and is moving ever further away from a 'proper' 4x4 driveline. But then I guess that's representative of the people who are likely to buy the thing.

Yes i guess you need that sort of capability in Chelsea in case you have to mount the pavement when you drop Horatio off at his school. Rolling Eyes 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Not even importing the "active driveline" into Australia as the Evoque 2WD version was such a sales dissaster! JLRA are avoiding anything which links LR with 2WD apparently. MY15

I applaud JLRA Thumbs Up Till date I have only seen 2 ed4 Freelander 2's and 1 ed4 Evoque! ED4's have been a super flop in Scotland! Stupid concept tbh handy to get emissions down so that it looks like their cars are greener. Also ed4's residual plummit as no one wants them up here. MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

They asked me when I ordered mine, do I want a 4 wheel drive or a 2 wheel drive model.
I said there was no point in having a car like this if its not 4 wheel drive and if I wanted 2 wheel drive Id go buy a MINI.

If they were half the price I might see why they might be attractive, but to save 500 quid and 2 miles per gallon, ridiculous.

I don't actually have a problem with the 2WD versions - they're the ones the townies should be buying! What I do have a problem with is the 4x4 version also being aimed at the same target group with all kinds of unreliable and expensive stuff added to that version just for them. Why not have a 2WD version for those who don't need 4WD, and a proper 4x4 version for those who need it, and leave it at that. I know why really, of course - it's because the townies all want the prestige of a 4x4 even though a 4x2 would better suit their needs.

I have just been reading up on the active drive line. Sounds horrendous. You can imagine that it will work OK for a few years and then you start to get connector problems, clutch problems etc and more electrics to go wrong. I would just settle for a centre diff lock. Perhaps it's a way of selling extended warranties. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Why cant "townies" have the AWD versions? Surely you must know that even in the dry weather AWD grip is far superior than the 2WD equivalent. Not to mention in the wet! Yes they dont need it for its off road ability Thumbs Up but you cannot compromise on safety can you Wink MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

Of course they can choose the 4WD version - but it should be a proper 4WD, not some kind of expensive Frankenstein creation that's part 4WD, part 2WD, and part marketing exercise. AD just goes far too far for my liking - it turns a 4WD into a 2WD nearly all the time in the interests of marketing and saving a couple of mpg. No thanks! If I buy a 4WD I want 4WD all the time. (Not that I get it from the Haldex either, but enough already!)
