JLR get tough on non approved mods and accessories

From another forum ...

Quote:

It has come to our attention that some of our approved outlets have been displaying vehicles for sale in their showrooms that are fitted with non-approved accessories or modifications to our products, and which have significant safety and performance risks. It seems inevitable that these vehicles would be presented for workshop services as well. JLR deems this practice is contrary to the terms and conditions of the franchise, requiring professional conduct of business, as well as overriding legal obligations on the sale of safe products and the monitoring of JLR products in the market place, and the general duty of care to our customers.

This practice should not continue.

By displaying modifications such as unapproved wheel and tyres, for example, in a fully branded showroom, or releasing such a vehicle from the workshop without comment, can lead the customer to think that the modifications have been fully validated and approved by JLR for use on our products – this is clearly not the case. The Retailer, workshop or Importer should be equally concerned that they may be deemed to have approved these products. Such modifications will result in the refusal of warranty for associated repairs and failures, or even worse have led to accidents where the component itself has failed.

We do not improperly restrict the commercial activities of our partners or legitimate third party suppliers, but because these practices are so misleading and can involve risk to the customer, we must be clear on the status of such practices.

If a customer does have work carried out independently, or if third party product does pass through your hands (even with engineering/safety assurances you find suitable from the customer or supplier) you need to have clear procedures in place to be absolutely clear to the customer that these products are neither associated with nor approved by JLR and JLR does not have any liability for such modifications.

For non-JLR product which the network might legitimately handle, the Importers and Retailers will be fully aware of their duty to monitor the integrity of these parts and the legal exposure to claims on the Importer/Retailer for any defects and consequences.

What the hell is an unapproved Tyre? Anything that isn't a Wrangler on an FL2? FL2 TD4 GS 60 reg Facelift - so many issues
2019 DS. Terribly unreliable.
Sold DS for a 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Fingers crossed....
Sold Outlander for a 2014 SD4 SE Tech because I’m mental
Now greatly regret selling the Outlander. MPG of the FL2 is atrocious and so are the fuel bills. Fun though 😎
Couldn’t afford the fuel bills so back to an older Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Significantly better than I remembered it to be…

More or less yes. LR issue a list of approved tyres (it's on TOPIx) so in theory anything else is not approved. Mind you last time I checked (in March) they had two separate, different lists, so who knows?
Original fitment is Goodyear/Continental/Michelin/Pirelli. There is also a list of aftermarket tyres, which does not include, for example, Wintrax. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Why? Because JLR want to absolve themselves of responsibility and potential litigation if someone buys a vehicle fitted with non approved fittings.
I would hazard a guess that an unapproved tyre is one falling outside the JLR and vehicle specifications for speed and load weightings.

I can see their point tbh.

If a franchised LR dealer (e.g Stratstone, Duckworths) buy in in part exchange or from auction a heavily modified defender with suspension lift, under body protection, roll bars, roof racks etc etc etc. and those bolt on extras are not sourced from Land Rover approved suppliers (Mantec, Safety Devices) then the franchise become liable should any of those extras fail after purchase.

Worst case scenario is a fatal accident caused by an after market component. LR or the franchise would be sued to hell and back.

moral of the story is that LR dealership sales department don't sell modified Land Rovers that haven't been modified with LR approved kit.

Mind you JLR would probably be on dodgy ground if the "non-approved" tyres (if load speed ratings were within limits specified) were equal to or exceeded any tyres that were "approve"d in terms of the tyre "Energy label" - eg the Nokian All Weathers that are rated better for Fuel Efficiency, Wet stopping and noise than anything JLR "approve"...........

You dont know what youre buying these days do you, even the manufacturers get caught out getting parts supplied to them that arent to spec, like black market Chinese made stuff, made to look exactly as the original all marked up correctly but made from inferior material as their suppliers have gone off and found someone to make the parts cheaper for them and the end user isnt told, or aware until something breaks.

Just because something appears to be original and genuine doesnt necessarily mean it will be these days, theres some very good fakers out there and the best ones are those even the proper manufacturer cant tell.

It's all to do with brand integrity. Each dealer/franchise is regularly inspected by JLR and are scored on a standard - in theory JLR will remove its franchise from them if not up to scratch.

It covers all sorts of things such as presentation/cleanliness of the premises through customer services, but importantly how the vehicle range is presented in the show room. There has to be the right model mix, including different specs and sufficient accessories on display to sell the range. Thats why you'll not see only base models and also why at least one will have a cycle carrier or roof box fitted etc.

It even comes down to how vehicles are placed in the showroom. Its a tough matrix to keep up with, so heaven forbid any dealer who is fitting aftermarket or non standard parts to showroom vehicles. Td4 XS manual, Orkney Grey, MY2014

I can understand this if it is sitting on forecourt for sale an a Land Rover Approved Vehicle.
One which has had service to date and 100+ point workshop check. All FL2's (3) Gone
2011 Mercedes C180 CGI Gone
FL2 GS Auto SD with heated leather, factory tints, alloy spare and a few other bits.

Fitting tyres 'not on JLR list' is no reason to put the punter at a disadvantage. What they say to their dealers is up to them ...

Be true to yourself. That way happiness lies...

This is nothing new. Every few years dealers get this sort of notification.

Vauxhall, VW, Audi, Mercedes all do it as well.

It's totally rubbish to a certain aspect. If you have a Freelander 2 GS with 16" wheels, then fit HSE 19's, in theory they are not approved for a GS, but we know mechanically they are all identical.

It's a pure arse covering exercise because of the legal action world we live in now.

There was a guy from LR at my local dealer when my Turbo was being replaced back in February and he even commented on the fact that it was a shame 20" wheels were never fitted to Freelander Dynamic like they were originally planned!

I can see why they are doing it, but nothing has really changed. Same thing applies, modify your car and you run the risk if warranty problems.

Same with a dealer selling such cars with modifications. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
