France 2012 Freelander 2 TD4 S Manual Santorini Black
Knocking noise on uneven surface

Hello everybody,

Big problem !

My Freelander MY 2011 Manual gear with 39 000 km makes knocking noise on deformed surface.

To be more precise, it happens that way :

Hot engine, audible with open windows, clanking noise on a slope on uneven road surface which occurs as soon as I press on the clutch pedal or I put the gear in neutral position ( free wheels). The noise disappears when re-engaging gears (for example 2nd or 3rd).
So, the noise is not present when 4 wheels works together with an engaged gear.

The car is at the dealer since 10 days and the noise can not be located. He ordered a special tool from Land Rover / Jaguar France with patches to localize it.

Any ideas ? Any suggestions ? What can it be ?

Please help ! Freelander 2 TD4 S / Santorini black / Genuine factory GPS with Bluetooth phone connection / Front and Rear parking aids

I've done some test and not been able to produce this noise even on rough broken stone road (as similar as I can to Paris cobbles and PM report to Julien). Can anyone else help? Gone... 2013 XS TD4 Manual Firenze Red

On the second thought, not necessarily because of the clutch system, like I said on PM.
What's different between on gear and neutral is the fact that when on neutral there is no connection between the engine and the road and all drivetrain components are rotating each with its own speed.
When on gear there is a physical connection between road and engine and all components are somehow working one against each other and there is a tension between them, quite the opposite from when in neutral when all are "loose".
So that tension could neutralize a possible "play" between some components and the sound can be from anywhere on the drivetrain...

Again, could you post your recordings on a file sharing site for us all to download and hear?

Did you checked the front drive halfshafts?
Otherwise, I don't know what to say...

I have never hears it on a Freelander but have driven a number of vehicles where the gearbox "chatters" when in neutral. I guess this is because of the reasons Alex outlined. John

Alex is right,

I'm driving this car since 1 year and 20 000 km on mountains and hignways and the clutch is OK. The dealer said it is still like new.

So don't drive a manual in neutral on uneven surface because you'll have knocking noise and rattle for the same reason mentioned above by Alex. Freelander 2 TD4 S / Santorini black / Genuine factory GPS with Bluetooth phone connection / Front and Rear parking aids
