England 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Manual Barolo Black
Cam box gasket leaking

My '57 TD4 has started to weep oil at the top back of the engine after 138k miles. My local garage said it is the cam box gasket and quoted me 5 hours labour plus parts to fix it. As that equates to well over 100litres of oil at the moment my inclination is to keep an eye on it. I can't find any info about this fault on this forum or on Google although it may have a different name. Has anybody here any experience of this or a similar problem? Or any advice on how to fix it?

LR Stratstone diagnosed my upper sump gasket leaking slightly on service in December, they suggested to leave it for the moment as it wasnt too serious but for it to be changed would involve dropping the sump, and the housing above the sump in order to change it.
They also suggested fitting a new sump + gaskets while the job was being done ''just to be on the safe side'' with a suggested cost in excess of £500 !!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Dont know if this the same/similar upper gasket as the Cam box ???

Check that it is not the breather pipe connection as it is a well known issue and easily fixed.

I had a look at http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic11567.html
but I can't see the top connection where the breather pipe joins back on to the air inlet pipe.
Any hints?

I'd get the engine thoroughly cleaned and dried first and then run it about for as long as it took to see exactly where it was leaking from before attempting any repairs. Thumbs Up

yes that looks like the connection at the metal clip on the breather.

what they did with mine was remove the clip and replace with a large jubilee clip.

seems to be a common problem.

once you fix it you will need to remove the metal plate underneath the sump and clean the oil off it, which has run down the back of the engine and gathered on the plate.

It is the joint to the left of the four small pipes, as suggested, clean the oil off and run for a bit and see where the oil is coming from. It does look like the breather hose joint which can be remedied for a couple of quid for a large jubilee clip. Let us know how you get on. Thumbs Up

I would also have said breather pipe joint. Had it on my MY07. Easily solved (by dealer under warranty in my case). Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone

Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Deffo breather pipe as mentioned above. A leak does end up around the sump.
The rubber pipe relaxes with age. I fixed mine with Blue Hylomar and a proper jubilee clip but it hasn't proved to be a permanent seal.

unfortunately that's how they make their money, by ripping off the customer.

or in the case of warranty work, ripping off the manufacturer.
