I expect they're the ones that spent 3 weeks at 45 degrees in 8 feet of water in the Solent last year.....

Keyless entry again, maybe time to go back to the old fashioned padlock like Mr Bean's Mini? Laughing

More evidence of what a rubbish decision it was to go for the keyless entry technology just to follow hi tech fashion. Complex, fragile, expensive, a car thief's delight and prone to all the vagaries of software glitches....... inappropriately targeted electronics without due engineering diligence in the execution.
Hated it on the Full Fat at work - where are you supposed to put the damn blipper thingy? Ok if you have a handbag I suppose.......

The same place as I kept my key, until it was needed. My pocket.

I agree though I don't see the point of keyless entry, I only have it as it was standard on the DS HSE. I open the DS keyless but always lock it with the fob, it's less hassle than trying swipe your finger along the part of the door handle that locks the door. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

In future the blipper will be injected into you, like a dogs microchip, then you cant forget where you left it and your wife can track you down at the pub Cool

It's not the technologies which are bad, it's the implementations. There are well known and obvious solutions to pretty much all of the current problems, it's just that for whatever reason they're not being used in current-generation LR products.

For example, by timing how long it takes the fob to respond to a ping, and knowing the characteristics of the fob, one can get a pretty accurate idea of how far away the fob is from the car. Introducing re-transmitters and the like will introduce further delays and make the fob seem further away. So just time the response and if it's more than a certain value (equivalent to a dozen feet, say) ignore it.

In the case of the current spate of RR thefts it appears that thieves can program new keys without access to existing keys. Whoever thought that a good idea was clearly having an off day! Yes, it allows LR Assist to get you on your way when you lose your key, but in this case a bit of inconvenience might be better than the side-effects!

Next-generation keyless entry will be better. And by the generation after that I might actually want it...!

This glitch does however show the potential for even smarter smart keys............. surely LR can ask some spotty teenager to scribble a few lines of software code so that when a smart key has handed over the Rangey to miscreants the owner just clicks on a smart phone app to have all the doors fling open when the vehicle is above a certain speed and turf the thieves out on the road - simple!
Owners of Vogue and Autobiography models would of course have the top of the range system so that anyone not wearing Gucci or Prada would automatically be turfed out. Its all about being a Premium Brand.
