I have Freelander 2 Td4 auto, registered In 2007, 183k km on the clock, regularly serviced. Recently it started to display periodic problems with the auto change from 1st to 2nd and occasionally 2nd to 3rd.I The gear change seems to slip when engaging between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd, very similarly to a slipping clutch on a manual box, causing the car to lurch forward a bit when the gears engage. Happens under soft accelleration. It only occurs between the lower gears, it operates perfectly in higher gears and when changing down. Any advice would be much appreciated. In ‘sport’ mode this slip or delay seems to be smaller, similarly on higher rev changes or when flooring, where it seems to be ok.

But has your auto gearbox oil been changed at all as that is not in a service ? FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

It may be a simple matter of box adaption (or not) to the new oil.
Did you dumped the autobox adaptions when you changed the oil?
Because after a 160k kilometer run on the same oil, that oil was a lot thicker than the new oil, being contaminated with clutch particles. And the box has been adapted to that thick oil and now, with a fresh and more thin oil, indeed, there is a slight slip until the clutches engages.
I would change again the oil, as this new oil from 160k change has been washing away any deposits, and after this I would dump the box and solenoids adaptions. This can be done with dealer level of diagnostics and be prepared for some erratic behavior with the box in the first hundreds of kilometers if they don't perform a basic box learning.

I have not dropped the box when changing the oil, but 6l came down with disconnecting the oil cooler and blasting it with compressed air through the level plug....Not as if it would mean a problem to get 7l of new oil, but if i understand you correctly, the solenoids are adapting themselves to the changed oil characteristic and contamination? Can i sokve the issue without dismantling the gearbox and just changing the oil?
How can you set the solenoids, mechanically or via programming?
Do you definitely need a LR device to be connected for this, or a good gearbox specialist could handle the issue?

Another thing i can imagine is, that i do not have enough fluid in the gearbox...

The box/solenoids are adapting to your driving style and pressures and wear and tear inside the box.
Ideally they should readapt themselves to the new oil and driving conditions, but sometimes, when the values are way outside some limits, they don't.
Do not dismantle the box. Just change again the oil and drop the adaptions via programming, as I've said, with the help of a dealer level of diagnostics/programming.
A good gearbox specialist may have this level of tools and can handle the issue.
I, for one, I didn't dropped the adaptions, but since 70k kms, I've partially changed the oil (3 liters) each service (at each 12k kms).

With my 3 series BMW you could reset the gearbox adaptions yourself, with a combination of peddle and button presses. Is there no way to do this on a FL2 without a visit to a LR garage ? Jules

Hey Guys, I seem to be having a similar problem with the gear changes on my auto SD4 XS 2010 model with 80k miles. After driving a little and the car warms up, changes in the lower gears feel as they are slipping with the car giving a mild jerk and a whooshing sound, as if the synchronisation is not there between the power from front to the back via the power transfer.

I just cant establish whether its due to slipping gears or whether the coupling has a bit of play (according to LR dealer).
LR dealer advised that I should replace the power transfer unit (LR066503) and the Drive Shaft (LR012189)

Transmission oil has not been changed yet, it has 80k miles and was going to change at 100k. Haldex Fluid has been replaced.

Any advice will be appreciated as its a expensive replacement and not sure whether this will solve the issue.

I really dont think, that the slip could be after the gearbox, meaning in the transfer unit, propshaft or haldex. You should replace the haldex fluid and filter though, is really time. If sour haldex is would not be locking properly all that would happen, is that your AWD would not be engaged.

Nevertheless change the gearbox oil as we, unplug its oil cooler and blast the box, piping and cooler with compressed air to get as much oil out as possible.

I have an appointment for end of june at a gearbox specialist, will keep you posted.

Haldex Fluid and Filter has been recently changed, so I will proceed with gearbox oil change and take it from there
