United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Santorini Black
Are mud flaps effective?

I am now the owner of a 2011 F2 TD4 XS and am thinking of fitting mud flaps.
The car is Santorini Black, so all the rain and mud splashes are soon evident.
If I fitted mud flaps, would they help
OR
would I be wasting my money.
Thanks

The FL2 OEM flaps are not the easiest to fit - rears are easy but the fronts take time - a mounting plate is inserted behind the wheel arch liner to support the flap. Part of the liner needs cutting with a Stanley knife. I've put them on all 5 of my previous FLs. The current FL2 came with them - but the dealer had done a poor job - probably rushed , mis-aligned, clips missing, screws all rusted at 6 months. I re-installed all 4 - replacing screws and washers with stainless items and bolts instead of screws from Ebay.

You can get almost identical flaps non-OEM significantly cheaper - think they are made of stiffer rubber though. Jules

Yes mudflaps work.
.
HOWEVER you need to research on this forum.
.
Members here report pattern non LR as appearing as if moulded from the LR tool yet being brittle, the lugs break off.
.
So....... You will probably only buy genuine LR!!
.
Message Dan at Duckworths for a deal,
.
Dan supplied mine, they are still intact at 2 years. The backs are not the best 'fit'....
.
Kind regards from Fred.

Mud flaps... yeah, they work, if you never go off road...

Otherwise, don't bother... Smile

Good point well made.
I think I will be in the 75/25 on/off road brigade.

Fred..how do I contact Dan at duckworths Question

Anyone else had bad experience with non LR flaps...they are certainly a lot cheaper than genuine parts I have noticed.

Thanks

Oh Yeah!!!
Unless you want your paint on your rear bumper affected. Same for fronts on door sills.
From what i've seen on here other than factory are not good quality. Failures around fixing points.
I wouldn't have driven out of the dealer unless they'd been fitted!

I have 2 identical [apart from colour] SD4s one with and one without flaps, both go on motorways and off road.

Mudflaps can get damaged off road and cost me about 1mpg in fuel when at motorway speeds....tested on trips around France and in this country. Also both are full serviced, same tyres and mileage in the teens at the moment.

The one with flaps had gloss black painted lower sections and the other has the grey rubbery feel finish.

One point that has not been mentioned.

For those of us towing caravans rear mudflaps are a necessity!
.
Now wait for CG to jump in!!

If you must fit mudflaps it is very simple to break them off by going into a nice rough field. Then your Freelie 2 will be much more capable should you wish to drive on tarmac which has snow thereon. Simple.
