Throw away bolts.

I have just changed the propshaft on my truck (see "Technical") and one of the workshop manual instructions is to throw away the propshaft bolts and fit new. I came across the same thing when fitting new brake discs where LR tell you to fit new calliper carrier to hub bolts. I went to the LR main dealer for some but was told they don't stock them and never have. I asked what happened in the workshop so the parts guy went and asked - "they re-use them" was the answer. I have decided to re-use the prop bolts on the grounds that they are not stretch bolts like cylinder head bolts and are only torqued up to 40nm. If you buy new bolts they have thread lock ready applied and it is my guess that this is why they tell use to use new ones. I decided to clean up the threads of the old bolts and fit them using blue Loctite thread lock.

Is it just me? John

Thats what I do with prop and brake carrier bolts. With other bolts I change compression washers or locking nuts (and even these can be used a few times if deemed ok after inspection).
For complete security you cant beat a good ol' castellated nut with split pin or bend up locking tabs - Laughing all uses extra labour time so garages dont want them. Jules
