David, the i6 usually does not use any oil. I have done 160.000 miles and I never topped up the oil. I change the oil every 15.000miles. It was only last year that I noticed an oil leak from the brake vacuum pump attached to right side of the engine body. I had the pump replaced and the leak obviously stopped. Mine is a 2008 model. |

The oil pressure warning light is just that - an oil pressure warning light. It's not an oil level light. You could have a sump full of oil but no pressure. If there is no oil in the engine then you will obviously not get pressure. You would have to have no oil showing on the dipstick to get no oil pressure, not merely 'just below the maximum mark'. If you were low on oil and just 1 litre of oil turned the light out, then you would probably have needed need another 5 litres to bring it up to the correct level!

Steve, I had similar thoughts to yourself and didn't expect adding a litre of oil to it to cure it. It was just below the minimum though and adding 1 litre to it has taken it to half way between max and min on the dipstick. The light went straight out on starting and when I took it for a run afterwards (about 5 miles) the light has stayed off.

I had one of our cars in for some work (throttle body replacement) and when I drove it away I noticed that the oil light had come on. I went straight back and they fiddled around with it and eventually found that the connector on the oil pressure switch had been dislodged when the throttle body had been replaced.
