Does the i6 use oil?

We've had our i6 for 9 months now. It was serviced at Guy Salmon in Stockport before we bought it from them at 29,908 miles in August last year.

I've checked the oil a few times since we've had it but not as often as I probably should have.

On 8th April it was sent to Taggarts on Maryhill Road in Glasgow as there was a rumble from the back. Turned out to be the rear wheel bearing on the N/S that was starting to rumble. They replaced that and supposedly health checked the car where everything was reported as being A1. It had covered 36,101 miles then.

It's done 400 miles in the last 2 days when we went to Newcastle and back where it ran beautifully.

Today, at 37,103 miles, I pushed the button to start it and get it out of the garage and the oil pressure warning light didn't go off. I stopped it straight away and checked the oil and it was slightly below minimum on the dipstick. I went to get a litre of oil for it and topped it up and started it again, the light went out straight away.

The underside of the car is bone dry, there's no visible leaks, and for it to have used a litre in 1000 miles I would have expected to see it smoking like Censored out of the back!

I think it's pretty obvious the dealer haven't checked the oil level when they health checked the car. What I'd like to know though, is it normal for the i6 engine to use a litre of oil in 9k miles? I've heard and read a lot about modern engines using oil but wanted to know if the i6 does...

Thankfully it's still got 4 months extended warranty on it so anything sinister can be dealt with by LR!

One thing I have noticed is the exhausts on it get covered in carbon quite quickly.

I cleaned them when we got it...

However after a while they look like this again...

Thanks in advance Smile

David, the i6 usually does not use any oil. I have done 160.000 miles and I never topped up the oil. I change the oil every 15.000miles. It was only last year that I noticed an oil leak from the brake vacuum pump attached to right side of the engine body. I had the pump replaced and the leak obviously stopped. Mine is a 2008 model.

The oil pressure warning light is just that - an oil pressure warning light. It's not an oil level light. You could have a sump full of oil but no pressure. If there is no oil in the engine then you will obviously not get pressure. You would have to have no oil showing on the dipstick to get no oil pressure, not merely 'just below the maximum mark'. If you were low on oil and just 1 litre of oil turned the light out, then you would probably have needed need another 5 litres to bring it up to the correct level!

You either have an oil pressure problem or an electrical problem (possibly the oil pressure switch). Either way, I'd take it back to the dealers for rectification or at the very least, to get the problem documented in case any related problems occur when the vehicle is out of warranty.

Steve, I had similar thoughts to yourself and didn't expect adding a litre of oil to it to cure it. It was just below the minimum though and adding 1 litre to it has taken it to half way between max and min on the dipstick. The light went straight out on starting and when I took it for a run afterwards (about 5 miles) the light has stayed off.

Interestingly, there was no audible warning from the car that the oil pressure light was on, just the red light on the dashboard.

I'm waiting for Taggarts to get in touch about a problem with the Range Rover tomorrow so I'll get this booked in for them to take a look at it then.

My brother has a 207 GTi with a 1.6 BMW Turbo engine in it, he's been told by a specialist that the engine in that can use up to 1 litre of oil per 1000 miles before it's considered to be using oil excessively which to me seems outrageous. It was because I've read on the internet about modern engines using oil I wanted to see if others had any experience before I go and speak to the dealer.

I had one of our cars in for some work (throttle body replacement) and when I drove it away I noticed that the oil light had come on. I went straight back and they fiddled around with it and eventually found that the connector on the oil pressure switch had been dislodged when the throttle body had been replaced.

Years ago I had the same on a Morris Marina and it was the oil pressure switch that was at fault (I don't know about the Freelander engine but some pressure switches come on a just a few psi so they don't tell you much about true pressure) 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

Thanks guys.

It was bought from Guy Salmon and has a Land Rover warranty on it so I'll get it booked in and investigated. There's no drips underneath it on the yard or in the garage, there's no oil in the coolant and it never seems to smoke... It must be going somewhere though...

Glad to know that your exhaust tips are always covered in carbon as well, leesbay.
