United Kingdom 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Orkney Grey
Transmission or final drive issue

Hi

I recently purchased a 2011 SD4 GS free lander 2 with Auto transmission, the vehicle has 44000 miles on it, I have noticed twice when reversing into my drive which has the slightest of inclines the car judders at very low speed from standing still as if it is up against something, also when you are slowing to a junction or roundabout it changes down quiet sharply,

any thoughts would be appreciated .

Haven't noticed any juddering but the auto changedown can at times be a little severe, especially in a quick reduction of speed as in approaching a roundabout. Also as it learns your driving style you may have been a bit adventurous in your driving and the quick changedowns are reflecting your driving style.

Agree with the severe change downs. I don't drive particularly spiritedly, I had always accepted it was a feature of the gearbox, one I hope is not present in the newer ones.

I wonder if the changedowns (which I have also noticed) are to do with maintaining control off road. Previous autos I have had have been much keener to freewheel, but of course a freewheeling car is less under control. Also of course, by changing down in a timely way the car is ready to go when you accelerate, rather than having to change first.
I also find that I use the brakes a lot less approaching roundabouts, as the gearbox is doing the braking for me. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

Could this be a manifestation of the 2011 model hesitation issues I wonder? There are a number of relevant threads to have a look at eg
