2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Indus Silver
Can anyone explain this MPG pattern?

Hi, I've owned my 2008 td4 freelander since July and have covered 14k miles. For the first 9000 miles I filled up with shell normal diesel and 250ml of castrol actevo 2t (usually filling at 1/2 tank) at every fill the average mpg calculated using road trip on the phone was 32.9.

I then did 2000 miles using she'll into plus diesel and the average rose to 35.9.

I have now driven 3000 miles with just She'll normal diesel and no 2t and the average has risen again to 36.85.

Now I was always happy to use 2t as I believed it would help as a preventative maintainence measure and thought it had made the car quiter and run more smoothly, now after 5k miles not using 2t I can't say I've felt any change in the engine - maybe a little louder (maybe) but why would the mpg rise without the use of 2t???

All suggestions or explain actions would be welcome as I know using 2t is always a decisive subject. Current 2008 Freel2 HSE

you don't say what the mileage is on the car. My MY 2010 has improved mpg between 32k and 45k and I have assumed its because the car has just generally "loosened up".
I use everything from supermarket fuel when on a decent offer to Shell / BP premium fuels (all with 2SO) and have never noticed any meaningful change in MPG it certainly doesn't increase on the occasions I don't use 2SO 'cos I forgot to re-fill the bottle!

Hmm, maybe they are like good wine and just improve with age - till they get too old!

I get around 30 - 32 mpg light foot short journeys with some motorway at 70mph on auto cruise so your return seems pretty decent to me. Sadly I have no theory to answer your question, it will be interesting to see if others do.

I hope so, as it just doesn't seem to make any sense when 2t is supposed to be the beneficial for the engine and I did believe that too.

The freel is driven on the motorway at 70mph occasionally on cruise control or fast a roads at between 60 and 70. My driving hasn't changed and if anything I've done more short journeys. Current 2008 Freel2 HSE

Whats beneficial for the engine in terms of longevity doesn't necessarily equate to the engine being the most efficient in terms of mpg.

Whilst you are adding oil to the fuel to make it smoother etc etc etc, you are essentially adding a heavier fluid, which may not atomise and disperse as well as normal slightly thinner diesel when pushed through the injectors into the cylinder. Cause it may not atomise as well, then it may not burn quite as efficiently, and hence not quite the same mpg.

In theory ... in my mind .... Cool

Ok I understand your reading I just recall from Yamaha fans original post that using 2t would also improve mpg as well as the engine benefits.

From my side I thought that a more lubricated engine would ease friction and perform better. Current 2008 Freel2 HSE

I did notice that you said that you were filling up at half tank and adding 250ml of 2so. Yamaha fan recommended 300ml per full tank, so you were adding about 100ml too much each time you filled up. This would have led to the concentration of 2so increasing each time you filled the tank and might lead to problems with fueling and combustion efficiency.

Good point - it probably was closer to quarter of a tank the majority of the time but yup Worth noting. Could this explain why I'm now getting a better mpg without the 2t? Or am I kidding myself that 2t would help mpg rather than just making me feel that I was doing my engine some good? Current 2008 Freel2 HSE

overdosing it might not be as beneficial as dosing correctly. Many people including me see no or very little improvement in MPG others do, sometimes significantly. I guess this depends on each engine how its set up and tuned, degree of wear and tear and so on.

The main and critical benefits if such there are is in the lubricating properties and the cleaning action / cleaner burn it offers. Low sulphur diesel fuel is lacking in lubrication quality so key and expensive items may wear that much quicker. There is no hard "evidence" for or against but I take my reduced exhaust emission results at MOT as being all the evidence I need that something positive is on offer at 75p per fill with 2SO
