BE AWARE OF PURCHASING EXTENDED WARRANTY

Through experience of LR's going wrong just outside their normal warranty period I have purchased LR Extended Warranty. In two years this will have cost me around £1700. All paper work is Landrover Headed and seems all above board.

I have now purchased another FR2 and when I went to cancel the DD payment I was told that because I claimed for a rear diff bearing in this years term I would need to pay the remaining balance for the current year. I explained the car had been sold and was replaced by another newer and more expensive Landrover but they weren't interested. I was told I could cancel but I would be written to asking for the remaining amount to be paid! Landrover advise me they have no leaverage with this warranty issue yet it's them that "contract" this warranty work out to this company? To be continued as they say...Please be careful.

I'm no expert on these matters but that seems reasonable to me. If you contracted to a two-year insurance policy, that's what you get. It doesn't matter that you are paying in monthly instalments. May have been different if you hadn't made a claim but they've got to get their money back otherwise they would be out if business. What's to stop someone taking out a similar policy, paying monthly, claiming in the first month, then cancelling the policy? Perhaps one way out would have been to sell/transfer the remainder of the policy to the new owner.

As above, you've taken out a contract. We had the same years ago with insurance, paying it monthly, eight months in we sold the vehicle, could not cancel the insurance as such, we still had to complete the payments. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

I agree with Steve, you took out the insurance and was quoted a price which you accepted.
It's like buying tyres on finance, you cant stop the payments going out just because your not using the tyres any longer.

Perhaps what you should have done was see if the warranty was transferable to the new owner and ask them for the balance?

Thanks. I can understand your point but what I am trying to bring to others attention is that at the time of the sale of the warranty it was explained that these were Landrover Warranties which everything pointed to but were infact warranties by a third party company. Even if I hadn't made a claim they would want paying.
I'm just trying to inform people to be aware. I thought these were a Landrover product and understood I would be able to stop them as I was purchasing a another Landrover.

I can't really add much to what has already been said. One thing I will say is that somewhere in the small print it will mention about having to complete the payments and once you sign an agreement you are bound by such terms even if you haven't actually read them.

As for it being a Land Rover product, it is on the face of it and can be utilised to repair your Land Rover but the 3rd party mentioned will no doubt be the underwriters. This is common practice and the underwriters have just changed on my mobile phone insurance policy funnily enough. The terms and benefits have not changed at all and it still has the same name plastered all over the documents but tucked away somewhere, the new underwriters get a mention. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I know you feel aggrieved Mr bee but if you had paid the £1700 in advance you wouldn't be looking for a refund would you. Paying it monthly is just an interest free loan. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

Paying it monthly actually means you have warranty asong as you keep paying

I had the same conversation with LRW and it was said that I may have to pay the remainder as I had a claim

Though the look at the amount paid each month and the claim cost

I cancelled it and heard no more Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

When I traded the last FR2 in half way through the warranty year I phoned the warranty people and they said that as I hadn't claimed during that year they wouldn't chase me for the rest of the payments. Which I thought was pretty fair of them.
Extended Warranty is transferable to a new private sale (and could be a good selling point) but NOT on a trade-in. Ex AA Series III LWB Safari - Gone
300TDi Disco (bought new - terrible car) sent back after 18 months
Freelander 1 Estate - leased, given back at end of lease
200TDi Disco (bought from a mate with 100,000 on the clock) - Gone
Disco 2 TD5 - sold and exported to France
FR2 TD4 GS - Gone
FR2 SD4 HSE - Now changed for a DS
New model ex-demo Evoque S 180 in white
Unable to order a new DS, so gave up. Now have a Volvo S90 Recharge.

We bought two FL2s with 2yr extended warranties last spring and paid £290 for each car. The 1st year was part of the "approved LR" scheme and the second year was supposed to be £790 but they knocked £500 off as part of the deal. I was told that it was transferable to a new owner with an admin fee of £40.
