Ok, not always as the Merc S-Class is seen as the king of luxury cars but if you read the vast majority of reviews, no matter how hard Audi try with the A4 or Merc with the new C-Class, the 3 series is easily the best car.

basically the build quality is superior to Landrover, and BMW have always been great drivers' cars.

I had one bmw. it was 2nd hand around 25k miles. nearly everything broke on it.engine dash faults central locking famously locking me out of itself total at nottinginham racecourse.

They seem to have fingers in all the pies, including your neck of the woods doc, are they not the preferred supplier to the bar council. I think they just advertise and advertise as you say and get bmw stamped in peoples brains. |

I had a 325 until moving to FL2 if you forget the seats are not ideal it was by far the best driving car I ever owned. Build quality excellent.

Because they do make some very good road cars! They're not the kind of cars I am ever likely to buy, but they are at/near the top of their class nonetheless. Even the X3 is good if what you're looking for is a jacked-up sports saloon for the road!
That's partly LR's fault for launching it with an old engine when the replacement is already in production! But even taking that out of the equation I've yet to see a review which places the DS up with the X3 on the road. Off road it's a different matter, obviously, but the on-road market is where LR have aimed the DS, and it seems they may have fallen short. It will be interesting to see what happens when it hits the market next year, |

E46 are bad for turbos and X5's have this same problem! People hype up the brand saying its bullet proof and its far from that! The cause of the turbos popping is the turbo breather filter getting clogged up! My FL1 has the BMW engine 2.0 TD4 and its breather filter is also fitted in the RR L322 3.0 TD6 BMW stated that these filters will last the life of the engine  yes that's right the ultimate driving machine boys 
It was only in 2007 that BMW told Land Rover that they were now to be replaced every years 12,000 and boy what a difference it makes as town driving clogs them up! Needing to get the old girl done in March along with the full service 
Below is a picture of a fecked FL1 because of the blue breather filter not being changed and the last pic shows where it goes under the engine cover on a FL1

For me that's an easy one. LR stick to what they do best. JLR are free to go after the Germans with the RRs and Jags. They don't need three brands all chasing exactly the same market! I must admit there's part of me hoping the DS flops, and pushes LR back towards doing what it does best. If they're not careful they'll end up, with their three brands, competing with themselves whilst the Germans take the prize. |

I agree Pab, I like the DS its size suits me more than the D4 but I was shocked when the wraps came off, I was expecting it to look a bit more utilitarian.

I'm sure it will come as no surprise that I'm with you on that one. Unfortunately, however, the noises coming out of Land Rover seem to suggest that we may be in for yet another disappointment - they seem to be talking about making it more mainstream, targeting much higher sales figures, appealing to a wider audience, more technology, etc, etc. None of that sounds particularly reassuring!
Bit different here, unfortunately. Most of the farmers are already in pickups of one kind or another, with relatively few Defenders around. A few years ago the village would have been full of green ovals on a Saturday morning - now it's Toyotas, Mazdas, VWs, etc. There are, however, a lot of FL2s (and FL1s) up here, showing that if LR get the vehicles right they'll sell. |
