Yes I can't complain, my son and I both get about 43-45mpg (both manuals) he does a lot of main road plus farm driving and I just do local travel. On a recent run up the motorway to Heathrow I got nearer 50mpg just cruising at 60/65. My wife's Peugeot 207 1.4 petrol isn't much better.

If you want a car that is fuel efficient, can cruise on the motorway for part of its day and then drive across a ploughed field (and get out instead of getting stuck) then an FL2 is ideal and nothing outside the LR stable can touch it.

The FL2 is undoubtedly best in class, but there are others which come close. Subaru's Forester is an obvious one for me (having owned one). For some reason it's under-rated over here, but in the States and elsewhere it's rightly regarded as a properly off-road-capable vehicle with good ground clearance and a good permanent, symmetric 4WD system. Mine even had low range (something I really miss on the FL2), although they seem to have dropped that from the current models. Plus, of course, Japanese reliability.

I will put in my opinion and largely expect a backlash from the 'anti-X3' brigade.

@ The Valeter
"I've heard the radio adverts re the X Drive saying by the time this ad finishes 420 decisions/changes or whatever have been made via the x-drive................God help the owners when the warranty runs out & all these fairly pointless features break."

The same can be said when a LR warranty runs out though - not sure why you regard these features as pointless? I agree the Xdrive set-up is probably not as good as the terrain response set up but I had 2 new haldex units fitted within 12 months which says a lot for LR.

@ Legoman
"Having both LR and BMW cars, the BMW is better made with better quality materials and attention to detail. In the back of beyond with a ton of snow I'd prefer the LR and their TC, but I can't remember anytime in the last few years when I needed or used that and apart from parking on the odd verge, I don't go off road. I'd suspect that's in line with 99% of other LR drivers. i purchased the LR because I like driving about in a larger car with a higher driving position, but I don't need it and boy do I pay for it.

I totally agree with your comments. However the X3 is larger than the FL2 (albeit I presume you have come from a 3 series or something similar so your statement is quite correct). My FL2 mpg was around 30-35mpg, the X3 runs between 45-50mpg - I used to be at the pumps at least once a week now it is once a fortnight!

@ Pab
"That's partly LR's fault for launching it with an old engine when the replacement is already in production! But even taking that out of the equation I've yet to see a review which places the DS up with the X3 on the road. Off road it's a different matter, obviously, but the on-road market is where LR have aimed the DS, and it seems they may have fallen short. It will be interesting to see what happens when it hits the market next year"

I totally agree with you Pab, I think the DS has fallen short also - why not offer a 5 seat arrangement? It will be interesting to see what the comparison is like when the DS gets the new engine, unfortunately for LR a new X3 is due in 2016 so I think BMW will have moved the game on a little further.. Now - 2017 BMW X3 M Sport Carbon Black
Gone - 2014 BMW X3 M Sport Space Grey, faultless!
Gone - 2011 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Bali Blue with xenons
Gone - 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Rimini Red with bodykit

Just to be clear, that comment was in the context of on-road only. As far as I'm concerned the X3 remains completely useless because I need the off-road and snow/ice capability, and only the DS offers that. And therein lies at least part of the problem - there's inevitably a compromise between on- and off-road capability, so the DS's off-road capability compromises it on-road (not only functionally, but cost-wise too). Better for LR to stick to the off-roaders and let BMW et al have the jacked-up sports saloon market.

That's one of the more inexplicable aspects of the DS launch - in other markets they do offer a 5-seat model, so why not here? I dare say it will turn up eventually, but what with seating arrangements, old engines and a poor choice of specifications for the SE and SE tech the launch has been very poorly managed.

I had my test drive yesterday in the manual, and it stuck to the road like glue, minimal body roll on the back roads I took on. I've never driven an X3 (don't intend to) so I can't compare them. If that's the route LR want to take they've made a good effort, perhaps lagging behind a bit but a nice car none the less.

The DS does look small though, at the preview event it was just DSs and they didn't look too bad, now I've seen it sitting next to its own kind its tiny but the space inside is fantastic, though some is wasted because of the stupid roofline. I felt though the interior looked nice its still pretty hard wearing, I won't be scared to put muddy dogs in the boot or rubbish to the tip. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Out of curiosity, are the BMW X3, X5 and Audi Q3, Q5 etc that bad in the snow/mud or is it that they are not as good as the Land Rover equivalents? I have never driven one and would be interested to know if they are as bad as some of the previous posts suggest. As a BMW 325 owner I have to agree with the earlier post about driver involvement. I have not driven anything that offers such a perfect balance between sportiness and comfort as the BMW. I haven't ever had a Jag though!

The BMW 3 series has been defeated in a critics review. WTF! Shocked

The new Jaguar XE beats the BMW 3 series according to the front cover of What Car? magazine. I couldn't see the comparison on their website but here is their review of the Jag: http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/jaguar/...ew/26240-2

I must say I think the new Jag looks great Thumbs Up

Some initial thoughts from Parkers suggest the Jag could be the new king: http://www.parkers.co.uk/company-cars/news...-3-series/

I may be old fashioned, but what about the uk jobs being created with LR.

Surely everyone clamouring for all things German these days only helps keep the german economy strong or does that not count for anything now. I suspect now the Euro is in trouble again, the beemers will be much cheaper so will sell even more.

Surely the LR product is not so different from the BMW to warrant everyone flocking to "be different and buy German", does not supporting UK industries and jobs count for anything!

I am a strong believer in British engineering excellence, loads of engine design, body design and technical development in the motor trade is done here in the UK, and the F1 teams seem to think we are the best in the world, so why does everyone praise the german engineering so much when the design is mostly british?  MY2014 SD4 XS
