The FL2 is undoubtedly best in class, but there are others which come close. Subaru's Forester is an obvious one for me (having owned one). For some reason it's under-rated over here, but in the States and elsewhere it's rightly regarded as a properly off-road-capable vehicle with good ground clearance and a good permanent, symmetric 4WD system. Mine even had low range (something I really miss on the FL2), although they seem to have dropped that from the current models. Plus, of course, Japanese reliability. |

I will put in my opinion and largely expect a backlash from the 'anti-X3' brigade.

Just to be clear, that comment was in the context of on-road only. As far as I'm concerned the X3 remains completely useless because I need the off-road and snow/ice capability, and only the DS offers that. And therein lies at least part of the problem - there's inevitably a compromise between on- and off-road capability, so the DS's off-road capability compromises it on-road (not only functionally, but cost-wise too). Better for LR to stick to the off-roaders and let BMW et al have the jacked-up sports saloon market.
That's one of the more inexplicable aspects of the DS launch - in other markets they do offer a 5-seat model, so why not here? I dare say it will turn up eventually, but what with seating arrangements, old engines and a poor choice of specifications for the SE and SE tech the launch has been very poorly managed. |

I had my test drive yesterday in the manual, and it stuck to the road like glue, minimal body roll on the back roads I took on. I've never driven an X3 (don't intend to) so I can't compare them. If that's the route LR want to take they've made a good effort, perhaps lagging behind a bit but a nice car none the less.

Out of curiosity, are the BMW X3, X5 and Audi Q3, Q5 etc that bad in the snow/mud or is it that they are not as good as the Land Rover equivalents? I have never driven one and would be interested to know if they are as bad as some of the previous posts suggest. As a BMW 325 owner I have to agree with the earlier post about driver involvement. I have not driven anything that offers such a perfect balance between sportiness and comfort as the BMW. I haven't ever had a Jag though! |
