Towbar/s.

Which is the best towbar to fit to a Freelander & best place to fit as in costs etc? I am thinking of getting a trailer so I can tow one of my MG's of choice to a show without getting them wet/dirty as often when I want to attend a show the weather is a pain?
Also would be looking for a suitable trailer that would allow an MG Montego to fit. Obviously if the Montego fits it the MG Metro & MG ZR-Express Van would fit too.
If trailer costs vary significantly then one that would take the Metro as I could simply just take that one if weather was iffy. (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

Hey Andy,

I used http://www.witter-towbars.co.uk/, and their service was excellent.
Not only did he fit the towbar and properly test all the electrics afterwards, but
he also spend best part of 45 minutes with a grinder and some spare mounting parts to fashion
me a bespoke mount for the electrics - as I had him fit my LR cycle carrier mount which prevented
the standard bracket for the electrics to fit properly - and NO EXTRA CHARGE.

Obviously I kept him in coffee and biscuits and gave him a large tip.

£372 all in, and done 48 hours after placing my order - in my driveway!

Pf Jones sell a wide range of bars, helpful too...If you are even halfway handy they are Very simple to fit by taking the rear bumper off, and the electrics plug straight in so that takes seconds. What took the longest for me was finding the right spanner which was awol! 2000 Xei 1.8 gone

Been looking at towbars for the past couple of weeks. Lots of reading and talking to fitters. I've used PF Jones in the past and will be doing again on monday. In the end the choice was between Witter and PF Jones (as it was last time) and PF Jones win on price. Both are professional and helpful. I suspect if I used a mobile fitter it would be the same one covering both companies...however, I live close enough to PF Jones to save an extra £40 on their already cheaper price by going in rather than using the mobile service.
Only reason I'm not fitting it myself is the lack of a torque wrench and having to have the software sorted separately (for which my local Land Rover Theft, they call it 'Service', Department quoted £80 +VAT) which is almost as much as the fitting/programming comes to from PFJ!

I spoke to this company today as I am thinking of getting a trailer for the MG's. http://johnpagetrailers.co.uk/download-brochures/

These are only about 25 miles from me so that is helpful.

They fit towbars & do one for the Freelander for around £350 but he asked if I wanted/ or maybe should have one that ties in with the car electrics so recognises things like rear sensors etc but that is around £200 more.

Is this required/recommended & if so what have you guys done in this case as gone this route or gone for just the standard unit/s? (Past) Freelander 2 HSE 2010 MY In Rimini Red.

I got a detachable TB fitted with 13pin caravan original electrics last September £480 + vat . I know you don't need the caravan electrics valeter , just thought it would give you a ball park number.
I would go for original electrics every time, a wee trailer symbol comes up on the dash when the trailer is being towed. Do it now ! Your a long time dead !!

the genuine Land Rover electrics are probably cheaper as on a later car!

Ive opted for a new genuine fixed height towbar which is the most robust you can get and the dealer fitted it from new. Ive also added a spacer block and now the rear camera picks up the towball which allows me to park even closer without hitting anything and my bumper is protected from the tow hitch. I spray painted it all matt black once the spacer block was added and you cannot even tell really that a block has been fitted. I am with Nut. The genuine towbar is the way to go in my opinion.

With regards to the electrics, the 13 pin electrics for the 2013MY> are only about £65 from LR and are a 15 Minute Job to installed with no wriing or programming. Simply plug and Play.

No reason what so ever for going for after market electrics. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Genuine Land Rover Towbar Rolling with laughter The Detachable one is terrible, I went through four in three years and I'm not alone in this before dumping it and getting a Westfalia one.

Get the genuine electrics definitely as they are well priced for the later fl2.

Many tow bars to chose from, I had a witter detachable on my old fl2 with dedicated wiring kit. The detachable bit was a poor fit and made a knocking noise. The electrics would not programme and for the money spent on trying to get the dam thing programmed I should have gone genuine from the start.

So genuine fixed bar and 13 pin lr electrics on new fl2. Spot on no complaints.

There was too much play between the pokey bit and the hole. Witter said its normal to have play otherwise it won't fit in the rear end. 👌.
