Modifications and Insurance.

What is meant by modification Question I can understand some points but not others, fitting certain accessories, yes/no or fitting new parts such as Brake Pads and Discs or tyres, that are of a lesser quality than the manufacturer fitted items, could be regarded as a modification Question But when a few stickers and the the heinous crime of fitting a second cigarette lighter in the rear Shocked

Is a Freel2 sticker classed as a modification Question
What about the dealers stickers, can understand people being mocked for having a Stratstone sticker, but is it a mod Question

A modification is anything that makes your car more desirable for theft or damage

If you have two cars one with posh big wheels one without that would make the one with more desirable for theft

Likeswise a large religious sticker could attract Satens followers and it been keyed etc Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I'd have said that the "Christ must be saviour" modification makes it less of a target for car theft, so should deliver a lower premium! Very Happy ...

An insurance policy is, as they say in Latin, Uberrimae Fidei - The utmost good faith. This means you should be open and honest about everything that you change to your car. However, consumable parts such as bulbs should largely be exempt from declaration. Afterall, a bulb can go and need to be replaced. Lighting upgrades are a different matter, such as HID kits obviously.

This bit caught my eye: "They have concluded that our request to declare all modifications was not made clear enough to Rev Parry and therefore she did not know which vehicle enhancements should have been declared."

The insurers would have fallen foul of the Contra Proferentum rule. This means any ambiguous term will be interpreted in a way least favourable to the party seeking to rely on it.

In simple terms, in a legal battle over the validity of the policy, the insurer would try to rely on the term of the policy but the customer would say it is vague and that they were unaware of what should and should not be declared. The court would interpret the term against the insurer as they are trying to rely on it and hence as in this case, the insurer has backed down and will review their wording. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

In simple terms the car should remain how it left the factory! If anything is altered in any way then it is classed as a mod! However any new accessories which were fitted from new by the dealer do not have to declared hence why you just tell them the new value of the car! MY14 Kahn Converted Dynamic - Fuji White Ebony/Pimento Interior

The way I see it is just phone it in. I told my insurance company that I had fitted both winter tyres and a spare set of alloys to the ST and they didn't charge anything. They made a note of the tyres but didn't care about the spare rims!

Peace of mind by having declared though Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

What I see is its classed as a Mod to fit an extra socket, but you can fit a bargain basement set of ditch finders but that's ok Neutral

Off Topic me neither, I do remember having one in a Maestro van, 25 years ago, had a job in London and ventured into an underground car park, took out all the flourescant lights as I forgot to take the aerial off Laughing
