Pretty hectic on the roads this morning, pushed a few people up hills on way to work, pulled a few more out of trouble. My commute takes me from Nottingham -> Wilmslow via A515/Buxton/Cat and Fiddle so get to see the worst of it.

Back roads from Cromford -> A515

Bit of a letdown I must say. Still some snow lying here but not much to write home about. My money is still safe as we head towards the last month of winter.

On another note, last winter was so mild because (in part at least) we were at the solar maximum and are only coming off the maximum this winter. There is correlation between mild winters and high solar activity. The cold winters of 09/10 and 10/11 occurred around the solar minimum of the last cycle.

However, the solar maximum just gone was a much lower maximum than many years previous and some scientists have suggested that the next minimum in 2019 could be as low as that of the Dalton or Maunder minimums. The latter occurred in the 17th century and saw bitter winters for many years which led to the so called little ice age. The Thames froze and frost fairs were held on it!

You never know!

Hmm, not sure about the reasoning for our previous mild winter, the US had one of their coldest remember. The effect of that was to strengthen the Jetstream, causing it to flatten out and fire mild westerly's at us.

I did see that pattern match with the 17th century and we could be approaching the same phase, however the planets a bit hotter than it was back then though.....
