Romania 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Auto Santorini Black
whining at 1100 RPM

Hello all,

Avid reader of the forum here, not much of a talker/poster though! I'm getting a very funny whining sound when the engine is precisely at 1100 RPM. Dealer has no idea where it comes from, and I thought I should tap a bit into the collective wisdom of the forum, as I know many people had whining issues here. Mine does not seem to be diff/haldex related though, but not sure. Car is MY2011, auto, TD4.

How the sound replicates:
- with engine idle, slowly revving up, somewhere at 1100 RPM I can hear the noise (groaning / whining kind, difficult to explain as you can imagine)
- stops as soon as the RPM goes past the 1100 threshold
- replicates when in all gears, on N and P which makes me think it's not transmission related
- replicates with aircon completely off
- does not change pitch when under load (ex. car in D, brake down, slowly opening throttle)
- does not seem to be a resonance issue (ex. the body getting to resonate at the specific frequency of the engine) but not sure
- does not come from the glove box or passenger side Very Happy and does not sound like something loose

As with any noises, I know it's a difficult exercise, but any help would be much appreciated; local LR dealer seems to be clueless but willing to help/test if I can get any indication of what may be wrong. Car still under warranty for some months and would of course like to get this done whilst LR is paying!

Many thanks for any ideas of what could be wrong. MY2011, TD4 Auto, Xenon headlights, fog lamps DRLs, sunroof, tinted windows, almond electric seats w/ lumbar support, leather steering wheel w/ audio controls, dog/luggage guard, ambient lights, flush Whispbars, Mantec sump&tank guards, Xtrons Head Unit

Even though it's happening in N and P, there's still a possibility of it being a 'torque converter' oil/pump noise.

Thanks EYorkshire - any way I can further test and see if this is truly the cause? You may be right actually as the noise sounds pretty similar to what you would hear when a steering pump runs on low fluid or when defective. MY2011, TD4 Auto, Xenon headlights, fog lamps DRLs, sunroof, tinted windows, almond electric seats w/ lumbar support, leather steering wheel w/ audio controls, dog/luggage guard, ambient lights, flush Whispbars, Mantec sump&tank guards, Xtrons Head Unit

Sorry I don't know of any way, the only reason for my post is that my previous SD4 auto 'whined' a little also at a certain RPM just below yours but worse when cold.
LR said it 'was normal for a torque converter', how true that is I do not know as this car doesn't 'whine'. Maybe it's down to tolerances within the unit.

Will take it to LR - really curious what they will say. Mine is pretty much the same when cold.
Will report back once I have an answer from them MY2011, TD4 Auto, Xenon headlights, fog lamps DRLs, sunroof, tinted windows, almond electric seats w/ lumbar support, leather steering wheel w/ audio controls, dog/luggage guard, ambient lights, flush Whispbars, Mantec sump&tank guards, Xtrons Head Unit

Did you listened in the engine bay, having somebody else to push the throttle?
Many weekends I end up in Bucharest. Maybe we will have a look/hear? Very Happy

Alex, I could not dare asking Smile
Whenever you drop by, just let me know. Happy to meet as I value your contributions here tremendously - and listening the engine bay or not, would still make a good chat over a coffee (would say beer but then who drives?).
(Off topic: hope you're coping well with the weather, although our cars only make us feel even better now) Wink MY2011, TD4 Auto, Xenon headlights, fog lamps DRLs, sunroof, tinted windows, almond electric seats w/ lumbar support, leather steering wheel w/ audio controls, dog/luggage guard, ambient lights, flush Whispbars, Mantec sump&tank guards, Xtrons Head Unit

Found the culprit - one year later! The plastic support of the chrome arse was vibrating against the tailgate at exactly that RPM. It also created some nice scratches each side of the plastic bit, which were eventually fixed by LR under warranty. Initially LR had no idea where the issue was, but once the tailgate was fixed the whining disappeared.
So Alex was again right - was a vibration... MY2011, TD4 Auto, Xenon headlights, fog lamps DRLs, sunroof, tinted windows, almond electric seats w/ lumbar support, leather steering wheel w/ audio controls, dog/luggage guard, ambient lights, flush Whispbars, Mantec sump&tank guards, Xtrons Head Unit

It's always nice to hear what the problem was. Thanks for reporting back. Many don't!
