Radio reception

The radio reception on my wifes Freelander (basic system) has always been poor. We know it's a reception problem because on local roads we knew almost to the yard where it would fade.
While she was doing her usual "press all the buttons until it finds a station" retune she switched it to FMa (only ever had it on FM1 before) and reception is 500% better, not perfect but where it would fade to nothing it now only drops the volume a little and picks up local stations that it never found before.
In the handbook I can only find that it has FMa and nothing about why it is giving better reception.
Does having it on FMa actually do something to help or is it just that the 8yr old radio is using bits that are not as worn out as the FM1 bits. Mine, Saab convertible
