Correct starting proceedure?

I've just picked up a 2012 TD4 and need clarification on the start button.

With the key in, clutch to the floor (manual box) should I press and immediately release button OR hold it in until it starts?

Likewise, when I want to stop the engine should I press and hold until the engine dies?

Reason being, sometimes it takes me several attemps in different ways to start it, I can't find the right pattern.

My 2013 Mondeo is simple, press and hold for both start & stop.

I realise that there will be a delay on start up when cold, for glow plugs, but can someone help me onto the right track.

Cheers

Just press momentarily and release, it will crank when ready. Same for stopping the engine.

Yes as EY says........sometimes when it is cold there will be a slight delay for the glow plugs to warm before cranking. The colder it is the longer the delay but rarely more than a 3 or 4 seconds

I believe that the first thing to do, for starting the engine, is to read the handbook manual.
The entire procedure is explained step by step, for all car types: automatic, manual, start/stop versions.
You can found the manuals here: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic10621.html

Read the manual and that's why I'm asking on the forum for real world experiences.

The manual simply says 'press button once to start, once to stop'. It does not say for how long to hold it for.

If I just press and immediately let go, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes it starts. If I hold until the engine turns over,
again, sometimes it starts but then stops. Very random and difficult to find the correct length of time. It's à real PITA.

The manual also states 'do not press twice' which I'm afraid of doing.

So the question, do you guys press and hold until engine turns over / fires or just hit the button and immediately let go?
