Towbar electrics fitted VPLFT0002 nothing working

I fitted a Witter tow bar with no problems and purchased a genuine electric kit from Ebay, Sell er said was new and not been fitted, came with fitting parts for pre 2009 and after 2009 and all fitting instructions in the form of illustrations.
Fitted great and all the plugs matched OK, put the three fuses into the box in the boot, connected my trailer and nothing happens. is this because the box has to be turned on by a dealer or should something still work without update ??

This particular towing electric kit should have basic lighting functions programming the module activates trailer stability and dash indicator lamp etc. I would recheck all the connecting plugs and earth connections before having it activated. Any good tow bar fitting workshop or independent specialist will be cheaper to program the unit. If not speak to your local dealer.
Have you checked the fuses for power just in case one is blown or seated in the wrong place.

Just in case anyone else wants to see the fitting instructions are here:

Thanks turboextreme for the fast reply, Now I know the trailer lights should work without the update I will check everything again in case I have missed something. I plugged a trailer / car tester in the socket and all the lights flashed until I plugged the trailer in when only one light stayed on, still nothing on trailer.
Will double check everything and report back.

P.S.
Great links and spot on with the instructions.

Turbo - once again thank you for your prompt and very helpful response BUT ........
My ongoing query is that I have the 13 pin wiring On its own (shown as 'A' in the diagram below) from the document 13 pin VPLFT0106
http://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/co...oupId=1671

I thought on 13MY onwards it was a simple plug and play install with no extras - it now looks as though I will also need the 15A fuses and the R5 relay to activate the extra functions that the 7N wiring does not cover (which are also shown as 'E' & 'F' on the same diagram?) Is that so? Or am I missing or over complicating things?

Sorry to be dim on this Rolling Eyes

The kit is wrongly named sb.....PLUG & PAY

Its my understanding that the later models do not need the towing ecu control module, but the genuine kit should include all the items in the diagram.

The relay is 40Aamp and the fuses are 15amp

here is a photo of the earlier kit showing the control box, you can just make out the fuses and relay in the plastic packet .

Yes you still need to install the relay and fuses in order for the electrics extra functions to work ie 12v caravan live. The only difference on the later models is no programming is required as every thing gets recognised automatically. Early models need programming to activate the towing module which also activates the stability control etc. Thumbs Up

The relay and fuses should come with the kit as in the instructions is your electrical kit new?

Here a picture of the supplied kit:

Yet again Thanks for the info
Last Question: Any idea what spec the 40Amp Relay is or if there is a compatible one (eg Ford)? No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

Just checked all the wiring again and made sure the earth is OK, Made sure all fuses are in place and not blown, but all I can get is outputs to lights and indicators just strobing as soon as ignition is turned on, operating electrics make no difference at all, permanent 12v is OK.
Could unit fitted be faulty ?

It could be that the module supplied with the wiring is faulty causing a poor can bus signal or that its not activated. I would speak to the main agent or supplier to confirm this as you never know if land rover has done this deliberately to stop DIY installations. Whistle

From my own experience with this very issue.
I had a genuine towbar and electrics fitted by a mobile fitter - he tried to activate the electrics with a westfalia diagnostics unit, but failed.
Nothing at all worked with the electrics when tried.
I took it to Land Rover, they charged me £40 or something like that for half an hour of diagnostic time - worked perfectly afterwards.

Does your trailer have LED lights. Quite a few makes (including Land Rover) have problems with LEDs because they don't use enough power. Mine, Saab convertible

My trailers all have conventional Bulbs, not gone down that route yet.

Have just got the car booked into Tow Trust to get it sorted, just over two weeks to get it in, must have a lot of work this time of the year. They quoted £50 + vat, Colliers quoted £138 + vat, what a rip off for connecting to a computer for 10 minuets by the dealers.
